Postdoctoral researcher in statistical learning and predictive processing (intracranial EEG)

Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology: Cognitive Neurobiology. In order to fill a fixed‑term full‑time position (39.83 hours/week) at the earliest possible date, we are looking for one Postdoctoral researcher in statistical learning and predictive processing (intracranial EEG).

Project Overview

The lab seeks to understand the cortical basis and computational principles of perception and experience‑dependent plasticity in the brain. Using multimodal approaches—including fMRI‑guided electrophysiological recordings in rodents and non‑human primates, fMRI and intracranial EEG (iEEG) in humans—a new postdoc will play a key role in analysing existing and newly acquired iEEG datasets, designing experiments, and developing computational models of predictive processing and statistical learning. The primary site for the project will be Ruhr University Bochum, in collaboration with the lab of Lucia Melloni and with clinical partners in Bochum and other sites.

Your tasks

• Design and implement experiments investigating statistical learning and predictive processing using intracranial EEG and intracortical microstimulation in human epilepsy patients.
• Analyze intracranial electrophysiological recordings with modern computational and statistical approaches.
• Develop experimental paradigms for studying predictive processing and experience‑dependent learning.
• Visualise, interpret, and present results.
• Prepare manuscripts for peer‑reviewed scientific journals.
• Collaborate with clinical and basic neuroscience partners.
• Develop independent research ideas and contribute to grant proposals.
• Supervise PhD and master’s students and contribute to mentoring within the research group.

Your profile

• PhD in neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, biomedical engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with electrophysiological data analysis (EEG, ECoG, or single‑unit recordings) and statistics.
• Strong programming skills (Python or MATLAB).
• Interest in statistical learning and/or predictive processing.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Fluency in spoken and written English; German language skills are beneficial for interaction with patients.
