Principal Civil Engineer (m/w/d)

Overview

The Principal Civil Engineer will be responsible for leading functional teams and projects and is regarded as a specialist in the field of structural & civil engineering. They must have in-depth expertise in structural & civil engineering as well as broad knowledge of the discipline within the engineering function. The Principal Civil Engineer will be the technical supervisor for the Civil Engineering Team within the Civil Engineering Department and will solve complex structural-related problems, working independently with minimal guidance while keeping the Department Manager appraised as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical supervision for the Civil Engineering Team, guiding senior and junior engineers and coordinating with Lead Engineers & Designers.
• Ensure discipline procedures, standards, calculation methods, templates, and guidelines are followed and continuously improved.
• Support staff development through coaching, technical training, knowledge-sharing sessions, and reviewing team performance.
• Assist the Discipline Manager with interviews and manpower planning.
• Lead the civil engineering scope across conceptual, FEED, and detailed design phases.
• Independently drive project tasks, resolve technical challenges, and ensure alignment with project contracts, specifications, schedules, and inter-discipline requirements.
• Coordinate closely with other discipline engineers, Client engineering, and the Project Engineering/Project Management Teams.
• Participate in kick-off, design review, vendor, workshop, 3D model, constructability, safety, and client meetings.
• Prepare and review structural/civil analyses, reports, and calculations, including foundation, pile, and drainage system design.
• Apply strong expertise in geotechnical, steel, and concrete structural engineering.
• Perform FEED verifications, gap analyses, and ensure engineering integrity and compliance across all deliverables.
• Review and approve discipline design basis, philosophies, specifications, reports, calculations and procedures.
• Review and approve vendor and subcontractor submissions, and verify design quality through single- and inter-discipline checks.
• Ensure the quality and audit readiness of civil engineering deliverables.
• Evaluate, communicate, and manage design changes with full awareness of project impact.
• Conduct Technical Quality Audits and ensure adherence to Fluence safety KPIs.
• Capture lessons learned and maintain accurate documentation within the Fluence Lessons Learned system.
• Prepare estimates for bid proposals, including technical queries, execution statements, software needs, and work-hour estimates.
• Participate in finalizing deliverables lists and ensure compliance with project specifications.
• Assist construction engineers in resolving site technical issues.
• Support design clarifications, technical decisions, and coordination with site teams as required.
• Present design solutions, technical issues, and project status to internal teams and customers.
• Support the Lead Engineer in negotiating resolutions with Customers when technical issues arise.
• Travel throughout EMEA / internationally as required.

Required Qualifications And Expertise

• Bachelor’s / Master’s degree in Civil or Structural engineering
• 15+ years of experience with a major contractor or consultants predominantly performing EPC projects
• Expert in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for complex civil and structural projects i.e Substations, oil and gas, power generation, etc.
• Strong experience in Structural and Civil Engineering softwares (i.e. STAADPro, ETABs, Autocad)
• Strong experience in the design of special structures (i.e HV transformers, AIS & GIS substations, Control room buildings, pile foundations, cable trenches & pull pits, etc.)
• Expert with applicable codes, standards and regulations used in EMEA Region
• Strong technical skills and experience in finding solution on complex technical issues.

• In-depth technical knowledge of the detailed design engineering process.
• Business language fluency in German & English

Hauptaufgaben

• Technische Führung und Betreuung des Civil Engineering Teams, Anleitung von Senior- und Junior-Ingenieurinnen sowie Koordination mit Lead Engineers und Designerinnen
• Sicherstellung der Einhaltung sowie kontinuierlichen Verbesserung von Disziplinverfahren, Standards, Berechnungsmethoden, Vorlagen und Richtlinien
• Förderung der Mitarbeiterentwicklung durch Coaching, technische Schulungen, Wissensaustausch und Leistungsbewertungen
• Unterstützung des Discipline Managers bei Interviews und der Personalbedarfsplanung
• Fachliche Leitung des Bauingenieurumfangs über alle Projektphasen hinweg (Konzept, FEED und Detailplanung)
• Eigenständige Steuerung von Projektaufgaben, Lösung technischer Herausforderungen und Sicherstellung der Übereinstimmung mit Verträgen, Spezifikationen, Terminplänen und interdisziplinären Anforderungen
• Enge Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Fachdisziplinen, dem Engineering des Kunden sowie den Projekt- und Projektmanagement-Teams
• Teilnahme an Kick-off-, Design-Review-, Lieferanten-, Workshop-, 3D-Modell-, Constructability-, Sicherheits- und Kundenmeetings
• Erstellung und Prüfung von statischen und bautechnischen Analysen, Berichten und Berechnungen, einschließlich Fundament-, Pfahl- und Entwässerungssystemen
• Anwendung fundierter Kenntnisse im Bereich Geotechnik sowie Stahl- und Stahlbetonbau
• Durchführung von FEED-Verifizierungen, Gap-Analysen sowie Sicherstellung der technischen Integrität und Konformität aller Engineering-Leistungen
• Prüfung und Freigabe von Design-Basis-Dokumenten, Konzepten, Spezifikationen, Berichten, Berechnungen und Verfahren
• Prüfung und Freigabe von Lieferanten- und Nachunternehmerunterlagen sowie Sicherstellung der Designqualität durch fachliche und interdisziplinäre Prüfungen
• Sicherstellung der Qualität und Auditfähigkeit aller bautechnischen Liefergegenstände
• Bewertung, Kommunikation und Steuerung von Designänderungen unter Berücksichtigung der Projektauswirkungen
• Durchführung technischer Qualitätsaudits sowie Sicherstellung der Einhaltung der Fluence-Sicherheits-KPIs
• Erfassung von „Lessons Learned“ und Pflege der Dokumentation im Fluence Lessons Learned System
• Erstellung von Kostenschätzungen für Angebotsprojekte, einschließlich technischer Klärungen, Ausführungskonzepte, Softwarebedarf und Stundenkalkulationen
• Mitwirkung bei der Finalisierung von Lieferlisten und Sicherstellung der Einhaltung projektspezifischer Anforderungen
• Unterstützung der Bauleitung bei der Lösung technischer Fragestellungen auf der Baustelle
• Unterstützung bei Designklärungen, technischen Entscheidungen und der Koordination mit Baustellenteams
• Präsentation von Designlösungen, technischen Fragestellungen und Projektstatus gegenüber internen Teams und Kunden
• Unterstützung des Lead Engineers bei technischen Klärungen und Verhandlungen mit Kunden
• Reisebereitschaft innerhalb der EMEA-Region sowie international

Erforderliche Qualifikationen und Fachkenntnisse

• Bachelor- oder Masterabschluss im Bauingenieurwesen oder Tragwerksplanung
• Mindestens 15 Jahre Berufserfahrung bei großen Auftragnehmern oder Ingenieurbüros mit Schwerpunkt auf EPC-Projekten
• Umfassende Erfahrung in Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) für komplexe Bau- und Tragwerksprojekte
• Sehr gute Kenntnisse gängiger Software im Bau- und Tragwerksingenieurwesen (z. B. STAAD.Pro, ETABS, AutoCAD)
• Umfangreiche Erfahrung in der Planung von Sonderbauwerken (z. B. Hochspannungstransformatoren, AIS- & GIS-Umspannwerke, Leitstellengebäude, Pfahlgründungen, Kabeltrassen und Kabelzugschächte)
• Sehr gute Kenntnisse der in der EMEA-Region geltenden Normen, Standards und Vorschriften
