QEC Calibration Engineer

Stellenbeschreibung:

The work

We are looking for a QEC Calibration Engineer to join our team in Munich, Germany, or Espoo, Finland, focusing on developing and improving quantum operations required for quantum error correction (QEC). In this role, you will work on calibration, benchmarking, and optimization of quantum processors to enable fault‑tolerant quantum computing. You will implement and execute QEC experiments, analyze system performance, and contribute to the development of control software and calibration strategies aligned with IQM’s QEC roadmap. This is a hands‑on role at the intersection of quantum hardware, calibration, and software, where your work will directly impact the performance and scalability of IQM’s quantum systems.

What you’ll actually do

  • Improve QPU calibration methods for QEC applications
  • Develop quantum operations such as readout, reset, leakage reduction
  • Implement, execute, and analyze QEC benchmark and demonstration experiments
  • Contribute to the development of quantum control software and calibration workflows
  • Identify and define technology‑stack requirements for QEC
  • Analyze experimental data and report results to stakeholders
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including Gates, Calibration & Benchmarking, software, and QPU design
  • Support knowledge sharing and mentoring of team members and interns
  • Participate in daily and weekly technical meetings

What we’re looking for

  • Strong understanding of quantum computing and QPU physics
  • At least two years of experience calibrating superconducting QPUs. Examples include experience calibrating single‑qubit gates, two‑qubit gates, readout, or other relevant quantum operations
  • Experience with data analysis in Python
  • Ability to execute experiments independently and analyze complex data
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
  • Good communication skills and ability to work across teams

Education & experience

  • PhD or MSc in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Several years of relevant experience in quantum computing or related areas

Nice to have

  • Experience calibrating large‑scale superconducting QPUs
  • Experience developing leakage reduction units or reset methods
  • Experience running quantum error correction experiments
  • Knowledge of QEC theory and error modeling
  • Experience with professional software development, including version control and collaboration tools such as Gitlab

What kind of person will thrive in this role?

  • Hands‑on and motivated to work on real quantum hardware challenges
  • Curious and driven to improve QEC performance and system‑level behavior
  • Collaborative and able to work across interdisciplinary teams
  • Detail‑oriented with a strong data‑driven mindset
  • Ambitious about advancing fault‑tolerant quantum computing
