The GWDG is seeking a Quantum Software Engineer (m/f/d). The position is part of the interdisciplinary team of HPC experts in the working group "Computing" (AG C). It offers a regular working week of 39 hours (full-time) and can be performed part-time. The position is initially limited to four years, with an option for a doctorate and long-term cooperation. Remuneration follows the federal public service collective agreement and can reach grade E 13, depending on qualification.

The Gesellschaft fuer wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG) is the university computing center of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and a computing and IT competence center for the Max Planck Society. It operates high-performance HPC systems for over 40 years, provides AI services (KISSKI), partners in the EU AI Factory HammerHAI, and supports the German Aerospace Center (DLR). As a national supercomputing centre it provides technical support to researchers and students from diverse domains and participates in national and international research projects.

In this role you will contribute to the QUICS (Quantum Innovation and Computing for SME) project, which aims to give SMEs low-threshold, secure, and reliable access to quantum resources through an online portal and to help companies identify and implement meaningful use cases of quantum computing. The successful candidate should have experience with quantum technologies, various quantum back-ends, and quantum simulators.

Responsibilities

  • Development of instructive use cases from various domains to evaluate QC applicability for SMEs
  • Developing and maintaining hybrid classical-quantum workflows
  • Performing suitability analyses for industrial and scientific QC applications
  • Scalable and efficient setup of quantum computing simulators in an HPC environment
  • Efficient, cost-aware execution of quantum algorithms on cloud-based quantum computing back-ends
  • Stay current with advancements in quantum computing research and translating findings into actionable solutions
  • Present findings at conferences and contribute to scientific reports and publications
  • Contribute in designing courses and hands-on for different training programs

Requirements

  • Completed university degree (Master/Diploma) in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Computational Science, or a related field
  • Good knowledge in quantum computing (programming, algorithms, NISQ architectures)
  • Software development, particularly in Python, including Jupyter environments
  • Familiarity with working on HPC systems, including GPUs
  • Excellent analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and communication skills
  • Fluent in written and spoken English

Desirable

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical customers
  • Experience with customer-facing technical roles
  • Basic knowledge of Agile software development (Kanban, Scrum)
  • Experience with service-oriented user support
  • Exposure to HPC, scientific computing, or data-intensive domains
  • Intermediate knowledge of German
