Stellenbeschreibung:

Position: Radiocarbon Laboratory Engineer (m/f/d)

Location: Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC), Jena

Position Overview

The MPI for Biogeochemistry seeks an engineer to support the institute’s 14 C lab facility, which supports radiocarbon measurements in biogeochemistry and carbon cycle research. The facility is equipped with an IonPlus Micadas accelerator mass spectrometer system with a hybrid ion source that allows for the measurement of graphite targets as well as CO2 gas inlet operation for very small samples. It also has a laboratory for preparation, CO2 purification, and graphitization of samples, with automation involved in several processes.

  • Routine operation, including data analysis, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the Micadas accelerator mass spectrometer, including ion source and inlet systems.
  • Maintenance and repairs of existing sample preparation instruments and vacuum lines for sample combustion, CO2 purification, and graphitization.
  • Technical development of new sample preparation systems to support projects involving radiocarbon measurement in the Institute.
  • Collaboration with other 14 C lab members in designing and fulfilling quality assurance processes.

Your Profile

  • University degree in engineering, or a Master’s degree in Physics, or a lab‑based natural science.
  • Demonstrated expertise in operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting/repair of complex automated instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of software (e.g. Labview or similar) used for automation of lab instrumentation.
  • Precision mechanical work is part of the repairs and maintenance of devices on the accelerator and in sample preparation.
  • Proactive and ‘hands‑on’ mentality, with ability to work accurately and independently.
  • Good skills in written and spoken English for communication with an international team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or interest in learning the operation and maintenance of systems for AMS measurement of radiocarbon.
  • Experience with vacuum systems for isolation of CO2, automated combustion systems, or stable isotope measurements.

Our Offer

The full‑time position is to be filled as soon as possible. Part‑time work is generally possible. The position will be evaluated and graded following the collective agreement according to TVöD Bund; in addition, a pension plan based on the public service (VBL) will be provided.
