United Nations University Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU‑FLORES)

UNU‑FLORES is one of 13 research and training institutes that comprise the UNU system. Based in Dresden, Germany, it develops strategies to resolve pressing issues in the sustainable use and integrated management of environmental resources such as water, soil, waste, energy and other geo‑resources, particularly in developing and emerging economies. The Institute engages in research, capacity development, postgraduate teaching, advanced training and knowledge dissemination to advance the Resource Nexus.

Responsibilities

Under the overall authority of the Director of UNU‑FLORES and the direct supervision of the Deputy Director, the Research Assistant will provide support by performing the following tasks:

  1. Research and Innovation Development
    • Research, extract and compile information and data related to the Resource Nexus, focusing on sustainability transformations and the Institute’s focus areas (Resilient Food, Forest and Ecosystems; Transformed Landscapes; Sustainable Buildings and Construction; Responsible Electronics).
    • Perform literature reviews (scientific literature and UN documents); synthesize key information for project proposals, scientific manuscripts, UN reports; support data collection, analysis and interpretation, including GIS, statistical analyses and assessment/modeling tools.
    • Prepare visualisations (diagrams, charts, maps); design questionnaires and support survey implementation.
    • Assist with manuscript proofing, originality checks and bibliographic corrections; support presentation creation for research events.
    • Assist with internal administration of research activities, monitoring, strategic planning and reporting.
    • Prepare information for Research Pillar and Development Proposal meetings, including research performance indicators and briefings on specific topics.
    • Support reporting to the UNU Centre and other UN entities (SDG contributions, High‑Level Political Dialogues, UNU Annual Reports).
    • Compile and evaluate information for research‑related KPI reporting to the UNU Centre.
    • Document research activities of adjuncts and research‑oriented UNU Hubs.
    • Collaborate with the Resource Nexus Events Associate on logistics for research‑related and science‑based advocacy events.
  2. Education and Capacity Development
    • Identify research products and findings for inclusion in the Knowledge Academy for the Resource Nexus (KARE).
    • Assist in designing educational materials based on the Institute’s research.
  3. Governance and Administration
    • Implement administrative regulations and policy frameworks relevant to activities and projects.
    • Assist in preparing documents for Academic Affiliation Agreements or Consultancy Contracts.
    • Support communication with donors and research partners, including reporting.
  4. Outreach, Advocacy and Impact
    • Prepare outputs and research‑related news pieces for the UNU‑FLORES website and social media.
    • Support communication with stakeholders in the UN system, Member States, NGOs and the private sector.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Contribution to research outputs (co‑authoring at least one peer‑reviewed article) and monitoring institutional performance indicators such as publications per academic staff and collaborations with the Global South.
  • Integration of research outputs into capacity‑building activities through KARE, increasing the number of education contributors and students taught.
  • Contribution to documenting and communicating project results to enhance institutional visibility (internal support and external communication, including online posts).
  • Timely implementation and quality of execution of responsibilities.
  • Proactive engagement with UNU‑FLORES partners (research partners, government, donors).
  • Positive reputation of UNU‑FLORES as a reliable and trustworthy partner among research partners, governments, the UN system, donors and civil society.

Education and Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environmental sciences, geosciences, sustainable development, environmental policy, environmental economics or similar disciplines related to integrated management of environmental resources (Resource Nexus).

Required Skills and Experience

  • At least one (1) year of research/academic working experience related to environment/sustainability.
  • Familiarity and demonstrated experience with the Resource Nexus or related concepts (e.g., integrated environmental resource management) through publications, reference projects, internships or previous employment.
  • Experience working in international settings (transnational cooperation or intergovernmental organisations).
  • Experience drafting complex reports, communications and presentations.
  • Basic experience in conducting trans‑/interdisciplinary research (e.g., master's thesis, research, consultancy employment) including interactions with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
  • Strong planning, organisation and time‑management skills and the ability to communicate clearly and efficiently in different contexts.
  • Initiative, strong conceptual abilities and sound judgement.
  • Flexibility to establish priorities and work within prescribed timeframes.
  • Excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural, multi‑ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of German and/or willingness to learn German is desired.
  • Knowledge of another UN official working language is an asset.

Remuneration

The successful candidate will be employed under a PSA contract on a full‑time (100%) basis. The position aligns with third‑party‑funded projects, subject to approval. The compensation package includes a monthly net salary of 2,895 EUR, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, prorated depending on contract duration, and a health insurance scheme. UNU is not liable for taxes levied on the remuneration; payment of such taxes remains the sole responsibility of the PSA holder.

Duration of Contract

The initial contract duration is 7 months, aligning with third‑party‑funded projects, subject to approval. This is a Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) with UNU, with the possibility of renewal, subject to project requirements, budget availability and satisfactory performance. The combined duration on a PSA contract with UNU may not exceed six (6) years. The mandatory retirement age for PSA holders is 65 years.
