The Professorship of Data Science in Earth Observation (Prof. Xiaoxiang Zhu) is seeking a research associate in the market of AI for Earth observation in Smart Cities Applications at the earliest possible date.

About Us

The Professorship develops modern signal processing and AI solutions to extract geoinformation from big Earth observation data. It collaborates with international partners and is a leader in AI in Earth observation (AI4EO).

Your mission

This position is funded by the ERC project AI4SmartCities, aiming at technology transfer and potential start-up creation. The candidate will conduct market research on AI for Smart Cities algorithms and applications, with opportunities to witness and participate in start-up development.

Responsibilities include:

  • Market analysis of geospatial information demand in smart cities
  • Documentation and improvement of deep learning algorithms for real-world applications
  • Communication with project members, TUM technology transfer office, and collaboration partners
  • Support in project management and reporting

Qualifications:

  • University degree (diploma/master's) in computer science, geoinformatics, data science, business, or related fields
  • Several years of experience in Earth observation research or industry, especially in market analysis of EO downstream applications
  • Understanding of AI algorithms in EO and ability to summarize new algorithms
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Good software design skills; experience with TensorFlow and PyTorch is a plus
  • Fluent in English and German
  • Motivated, independent, team-oriented work style

Additional preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of signal processing algorithms for images, videos, or audio
  • Graphic design skills (PowerPoint, Photoshop)
  • Doctoral degree (preferred but not mandatory)
  • Website design experience
