Overview

The Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics is seeking a PhD candidate to develop advanced modeling and data‑driven approaches for investigating interactions between soil degradation and atmospheric variability, focusing on precipitation patterns and extremes. Over land, moisture that feeds precipitation originates both from the underlying land surface and from large‑scale atmospheric circulation transporting ocean moisture to continents. Understanding how soil degradation affects these processes is essential for improving predictions of hydrological and climate dynamics. The position is part of the second funding phase of the Cluster of Excellence "Climate, Climatic Change, and Society" (CLICCS), which investigates climate dynamics and climate‑related social dynamics as well as the interactions between the two. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI‑M) and will leverage Industry 4.0 technologies—including artificial intelligence, satellite remote sensing, global datasets, and big‑data analytics—to design and implement predictive models that quantify relationships between soil degradation and changes in precipitation behaviour, including extremes. Doctoral candidates are members of the structured doctoral program of the School of Integrated Climate and Earth System Sciences (SICSS), which provides high‑quality, interdisciplinary, and internationally oriented training.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research on the interaction between land degradation and climatic parameters, especially precipitation patterns and extremes.
  • Combine theory, big‑data analytics, remote sensing, and computational tools to advance hydrologic modelling.
  • Publish in peer‑reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
  • Assist with other research activities as deemed reasonable by the Head of the Institute.
  • Visit other universities and institutes for research collaboration if necessary.

Profile

  • Completed scientific university studies, especially in Environmental engineering, hydrology, geoscience or related disciplines.

Desired knowledge and personal skills

  • Excellent academic results and recognitions.
  • Demonstrated experiences with hydrologic modelling.
  • Experience with remote sensing, data mining, geospatial data assimilation (advantage).
  • Excellent communication skills in English.

Our offer

  • Further scientific training is possible outside duties; results can be used for a dissertation.
  • Job in an interesting, friendly and appreciative working environment.
  • Flexible and family‑friendly working conditions.
  • 30 days vacation per year (5‑days a week).
  • Good public transport connections.
  • Comprehensive training and further education programmes; internal offers for health promotion and special conditions in further gyms.
