The Institute of Mechatronic Systems welcomes applications for the following position starting 1 May 2026: Researcher (Postdoc Position) in Biomedical Engineering (salary scale 13 TV-L, 100 %)

The position is a fixed-term 2-year position with a possible extension afterwards. The workplace is at the Campus of Mechanical Engineering in Garbsen.

The Opportunity

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research position in Biomedical Engineering with the perspective to build and lead your own research group at the Institute of Mechatronic Systems (IMES) , Leibniz University Hannover.

This position offers the opportunity to independently shape research directions and actively contribute to a collaborative institute culture, while developing technologies that support patients and medical professionals in diagnosis and therapy.

About the Research Group

The Biomedical Engineering group focuses on the development of mechatronic, robotic, and AI-assisted systems for medical applications, with an emphasis on engineering-driven innovation.

Current research topics include:

• Robot- and AI-assisted diagnostic and interventional systems
• Advanced and Personalized Assistive Health Technologies

This position is not aimed at medical data science or medical image analysis profiles. We explicitly seek candidates with an engineering and systems-oriented background.

Your Role as a Postdoc

You will mentor and advise a compact team of PhD candidates, each at different stages of their doctoral research. Your role combines scientific leadership, mentoring, and strategic development, with substantial freedom to shape how the group evolves.

Key responsibilities include:

• Mentoring and supervising PhD candidates in both scientific and career-related matters
• Developing and refining the group’s research agenda together with the team
• Publish and present your research in international Journals and on conferences
• Initiating and coordinating third-party funded research projects
• Contributing to institute-level decision-making and everyday collaboration within the IMES leadership team
• Teaching in the Bachelor’s program Biomedical Engineering, including the design of new courses

What We Are Looking For

• Prerequisite for employment is a university degree in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics)
• Furthermore, a completed relevant doctoral degree is expected
• Ideally, one or more year(s) of Postdoc experience
• Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken; German skills are optional
• Motivation to take on research leadership responsibilities
• Interest in collaborative research environments and interdisciplinary work
• Willingness to engage in teaching and academic self-governance
