Education

• High School diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

• None required.

Certifications

• Current State of Louisiana License as a Respiratory Therapist
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (National Board of Respiratory Care)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
• Proficiency with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals.

Job Duties

• Perform routine and advanced therapeutic procedures according to established policy and procedure.
• Review and document all clinical information for each patient.
• Educate patients and coworkers on procedures and treatment plans.
• Perform diagnostic procedures, including arterial blood gases and EKGs.
• Provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of patient served in assigned area.
• Adapt behavior to specific patient population, respecting privacy, communication style, etc.
• Other related duties as required, including compliance with federal, state and local laws, accreditation standards and Ochsner Health System Compliance & Privacy Program.

Physical and Environmental Demands

• Very heavy work: exerting in excess of 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, 20 pounds constantly.
• Mechanical lifting devices or team lifts should be utilized; ability to stoop, bend, reach and grab.
• Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods and travel throughout facilities.
• Flexible work schedule (24/7, weekend, holiday, on call).
• Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue; occupational risk of communicable diseases.
