The Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM, is the largest research institute for tropical medicine in Germany and member of the Leibniz Research Association, the National Reference Centre for Tropical Pathogens, and a WHO collaborating centre.

Structural Virology Group

The Structural Virology Group led by Dr. Maria Rosenthal at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg is looking for a highly motivated Scientific Research Coordinator (m/f/d) on a full‑time or part‑time basis, EG 13 TV‑AVH.

The research group combines structural biology, virology and biochemistry methods to investigate the mechanisms of genome replication and transcription of medically relevant bunyaviruses and develop antiviral strategies.

Core Tasks of This Position

  • Scientific project management (administration and budget overview, procurement, reporting, preparation of presentations, etc.)
  • Support in the acquisition of research funding (writing, literature search, illustrations for grant proposals and presentations, coordination with project partners, etc.)
  • Coordination of scientific publications (text and illustrations, timelines, data management)
  • Support with scientific outreach (updates of the group’s homepage, proof‑reading press releases, etc.)
  • Organization of scientific meetings and retreats, support with travel planning
  • Support for the move of the labs and offices to the CSSB (DESY campus)
  • Lab management (applications and documentation for work with GMOs, updating operating procedures and documentation, coordination of instrument repairs and procurement, etc.)
  • Support of hiring, onboarding and off‑boarding of team members

Your Profile

  • Master of Science degree in biochemistry, molecular life science, biology or related areas; a PhD is an advantage.
  • Practical experience in wet‑lab work (molecular biology, protein expression, protein purification, biochemical assays and cell culture, etc.)
  • Experience with genetic engineering work (i.e. molecular cloning and handling of GMOs) and familiarity with laboratory safety requirements.
  • Experience with structural biology and biophysical methods is an asset.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Strong affinity for scientific writing and editing.
  • Experience with the coordination of third‑party‑funded projects, including budget oversight, is a strong plus.
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to work independently and flexibly with a strong commitment to meeting deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, team spirit and resilience.
  • Highly structured working style combined with a creative, solution‑oriented approach to complex organisational and scientific challenges.

Remuneration is paid in accordance with TV‑AVH (collective agreement of the Hamburg Labour Law Association) in pay group EG 13. The position should start as soon as possible and is initially limited until 30 September 2027.
