Scientist (all genders) for MOCVD epitaxy with a focus on gallium nitride

Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is a leading scientific institution dedicated to advancing semiconductor technology across the entire value chain, from high-frequency circuits and voltage converter modules to laser systems and quantum computing hardware.

We are looking for a scientist, all genders, for MOCVD epitaxy with a focus on gallium nitride to contribute expertise and tackle exciting challenges in cutting-edge research and development.

What You Will Do

• Further develop MOCVD production processes for GaN component structures, focusing on quality, efficiency, yield, and reliability.
• Acquire and manage national and international projects in collaboration with the Power Electronics business unit to strengthen European semiconductor industry capacity.
• Work interdisciplinary with the Epitaxy and Microelectronics departments to develop pioneering solutions.

What You Bring To The Table

• Completed university degree (Master’s/Diploma) in physics, materials science, microsystems engineering, or a related field; a doctorate is ideal.
• Experience in metal‑organic vapor‑phase epitaxy (MOCVD), especially in GaN electronics, and knowledge of materials science and semiconductor device functionality.
• Enthusiasm for translating research results into applications.
• Independent working style and rapid problem-solving ability.
• Team spirit, strong communication skills, and a passion for experimental work.
• Experience in an industrial environment and in project acquisition and management is a plus.
• Business-fluent English skills.

What You Can Expect

• Scientific background in physics, materials science, or microsystems engineering; Ph.D. advantageous but not required.
• Experience in MOCVD and semiconductor device functionality.
• Experience in an industrial setting and/or project management is a plus.
• Business-level English proficiency.
• Team player, strong communication skills, and enthusiasm for experimental work.

The working week is 39 hours. The position is initially limited to three years. Appointment, remuneration, and social security benefits are based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD), with the possibility of performance-based variable remuneration.
