What To Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Controls Design Engineer for Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg. This role will require experience from continuous process controls as well as HVAC controls industries. The Gigafactory design team drives to create the factory of the future by overseeing the design of cutting‑edge large‑scale equipment and utility systems in support of highly innovating manufacturing processes.

What You’ll Do

  • Engage in early equipment concept development, optimizing product specifications, process controls, layout complexity, costs, quality, and delivery timelines.
  • Design P&IDs for utility and process systems, ensuring accurate representation of flows and controls.
  • Prepare detailed drawing packages, including schematics and assembly views for clarity.
  • Specify instrumentation requirements, compile instrument lists, and create location plans for efficient installation.
  • Plan layouts for new control panels, focusing on ergonomics and accessibility.
  • Develop networking topologies and produce detailed network drawings for robust connectivity.
  • Size and specify control and communications cables to meet performance standards.
  • Select and dimension electrical and electromechanical components, such as valves, solenoids, circuit breakers, starters, and VFDs.
  • Offer insights for sequence of operations (SOO) documents and functional control specifications.
  • Collaborate with PLC and SCADA teams to integrate cutting‑edge control solutions.
  • Support the creation of Tesla specifications and industry standards.
  • Participate in design validation processes, including NormOp and HazOp analyses.
  • Oversee start‑up and commissioning activities to ensure smooth operations.
  • Draft RFQs for vendors and evaluate their technical proposals thoroughly.
  • Enforce Tesla standards while managing suppliers through specification, design review, and approval stages.
  • Develop test plans and supervise their execution at vendor sites and Tesla facilities during installation and final buy‑off.
  • Provide support for construction and commissioning phases to resolve on‑site issues.

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong knowledge of electrical design compliance across regions, including German codes (DIN, VDE) and equivalents (local voltage, regulations, governing bodies).
  • Proficient in designing electrical and power distribution systems using ePlan.
  • Skilled in utility, chemical, and HVAC control processes.
  • Experienced in selecting circuit protectors, wires, cables, sensors, safety hardware, PLC components, remote I/O, VFDs, and instrumentation.
  • Expert in specifying industrial equipment, such as level, temperature, and pressure transducers, current/power meters, and control valves.
  • Familiar with German safety (ATEX, EX), water (WHG), and emissions regulations.
  • Fluent in English; German proficiency advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills for flexible, agile projects.
