Staff Software Engineer (Steuerbot)

This role sits with Steuerbot, a Stuttgart-based brand within the Taxfix Group. This app guides users through their tax return in a friendly chat format, using clear, personalised questions that make filing simple with no jargon, nor stress. We believe everyone should be able to do their own taxes and get the most out of their refund, regardless of income or background.

The opportunity:

As a backend developer, you’ll be part of a shared team between Steuerbot and Taxfix, directly led by the Steuerbot founders. You'll help us develop the unique technology that enables and accelerates the growth of Steuerbot and Taxfix. At the same time, you'll have the opportunity to further expand existing approaches in areas like CI/CD and test automation. Beyond pure development, you'll also have the chance to dive into exciting topics such as machine learning, database optimization, or data engineering. We're happy to give you time to explore new areas and grow your skills!

Your responsibilities and decisions:

• Build, improve, and maintain fullstack functionality across our backend services and web frontend, with a focus on correctness, performance, and maintainability.
• Design and evolve APIs and system boundaries so teams can move fast without creating fragile dependencies.
• Collaborate closely with product and design partners to shape solutions, clarify edge cases early, and deliver features end to end.
• Strengthen release safety and developer experience by improving continuous integration and delivery practices and test automation.
• Take ownership of production health for the parts of the system you work on, including observability, incident response, and follow-up improvements through the on-call rotation.
• Drive pragmatic architectural improvements that reduce complexity over time, rather than adding it.
• Lead through influence by mentoring, unblocking, and setting a high bar for engineering quality without needing direct reports.

Your profile:

• Strong professional experience as a fullstack engineer, with deep backend expertise and confidence owning frontend work when needed.
• Preferably strong Golang skills, and solid experience with modern frontend development using JavaScript and TypeScript.
• Proven system design ability: you can explain trade-offs clearly, make decisions with imperfect information, and keep systems evolvable.
• Experience operating containerized services in production and working with Kubernetes or similar orchestration tooling.
• A quality mindset: you care about automated testing, safe releases, and building systems that are understandable for others.
• Professional fluency in German.
• Familiarity with generative AI tools
