Our Medicine Division at North West Anglia Foundation Trust is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Stroke Medicine to join our friendly and supportive team. You will be part of a dynamic and forward-thinking team of Stroke Consultants delivering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient stroke services across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire. We are a leading hub of innovations in precision stroke medicine implementing new technologies such as Clopidogrel resistance testing, multimodule point-of-care ultrasound in neurology, neurointensive care and stroke medicine, pre-hospital stroke video triage, and mobile stroke unit. We also run highly specialised services including young stroke and spasticity services and more. There is an emphasis on innovation and research, with opportunities to participate in research initiatives and service improvement projects aligned with national priorities and local commissioning needs. The role also involves training and development of colleagues, doctors, and the wider multidisciplinary team. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a collaborative, cross-organisational team committed to delivering high-quality stroke care and driving future service development across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire.
This post is offered as 10 PAs, including 1:5 weekend daytime work (9am–5pm), and on-call working. Part-time applications will be considered. The role will work closely with colleagues within the ICS to bring innovative collaboration between North West Anglia and Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) NHS Foundation Trusts to enhance stroke care across the region by combining clinical expertise, shared learning, and best practice, and to contribute to service development and clinical governance. You will play a key role in delivering emergency and acute stroke care, including thrombolysis, thrombectomy and early rehabilitation, as well as supporting outpatient services for stroke and TIA patients. You may also work with community teams such as the Early Supported Discharge service and provide specialist advice to colleagues across other specialties. As a Stroke Consultant, you will bring your expertise in managing thrombolysis, thrombectomy referrals, Emergency TIA service, ward rounds, inpatient referrals, and MDT meetings, as per an internal rota.
You must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (or possess equivalent experience). We will provide suitable office accommodation, secretarial support, and IT access.

Key Areas of Responsibilities
Clinical Care Responsibilities
You will support the delivery of stroke services to the populations of Greater Peterborough and Southwest Lincolnshire in partnership with the current team of consultants. Your primary base will be Peterborough City Hospital, working within the Hyperacute Stroke Unit and Acute Stroke Units, with the potential for cross-site work at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in the Acute Rehabilitation Stroke Unit. The Stroke Consultants and Stroke Specialty Doctors team consists of twelve specialists who provide the following services: Emergency stroke care, including pre-hospital and hospital emergency and hyperacute care; TIA emergency service, general and specialized out-patient stroke service. You will work closely with the established consultants to ensure the equitable delivery of stroke services across the Trust, with collaborative working and mutual cover for annual and study leave.
Research
Our Acute Stroke Centre (ASC) is highly engaged in research across all areas of stroke medicine, supported by a dedicated team of research nurses. You will have the opportunity to play an active role in high-quality national and international research projects, while also being encouraged to innovate, design, and lead your own home-grown research initiatives. We are at the forefront of developing, implementing, and training in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in neurology, neuro-intensive care and stroke medicine, creating innovative multimodal POCUS programs. We are actively involved in the World Organisation of Neurosonology (WON), contributing to numerous research and educational projects. Dr Licenik serves as co-chair of ESNCH/WON Focused Echocardiography and POCUS Working Group, with significant participation from NWAFT stroke physicians. NWAFT ASC is one of 19 European stroke centres taking part in the SECRETO study focused on young stroke research and care. We are leaders in clinical research across pre-hospital emergency care, including hybrid mobile stroke units, and are involved in PRESTO (Pre-hospital Stroke Treatment Organisation). We are also engaged in projects in oral history in stroke medicine in collaboration with partner universities and organisations.
Teaching and Training
As a stroke specialist, you will offer stroke consultation and advisory services to medical colleagues across various specialties. We are dedicated to education, providing comprehensive stroke educational and training programmes for multidisciplinary teams in the East of England region and beyond. We will be one of the BIASP national simulation centres offering UK and Ireland Acute Stroke Simulation Courses. We are involved in international training programmes and developed the WON Educational programme in POCUS. You will have the opportunity to participate in local, regional, national and international educational programmes with strong support from the team. You will supervise and train junior medical staff as appropriate and participate in training for medical students from Cambridge and Leicester Universities, as well as for doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other healthcare professionals.
Leadership and Service Development
You will be part of a clinically led organisation where consultants contribute to senior management decision-making. You will help manage the stroke service and contribute to future service developments, providing medical input and collaborating with consultants and nursing colleagues to enhance stroke services for North Cambridgeshire and Southwest Lincolnshire. Within collaboration with Cambridge University Hospitals Comprehensive Stroke Centre you will be part of the team providing regional thrombectomy service. This will involve fostering multidisciplinary collaboration and ensuring clinical governance adherence. You will be encouraged to join specialised services and develop your portfolio.
Clinical Governance / Medical Audit
The Trust is committed to ongoing professional development, offering training opportunities. Active involvement in Clinical Audit is a priority, and doctors are expected to engage in audit activities, adhering to protocols and patient safety policies. This includes hand hygiene and PPE policies. The Trust provides a protected clinical governance/audit half-day each month for mandatory training and ongoing audit projects. All medical staff are encouraged to participate.
Continuing Professional Development
Departments organise education sessions and share insights through governance meetings. Staff may attend Trust-wide knowledge-sharing events. These sessions focus on key cases and provide a platform for collaborative learning.

Where your role requires a DBS check, the Trust will pay the fee upfront and reclaim the cost (including a £5 admin fee) from your first month’s salary. Volunteers are exempt.
