System Architect (Embedded Systems) – Medical Devices – Netherlands/Stuttgart - FREELANCE/ZZP

Our client is looking for a System Architect who can take end-to-end architectural ownership of products, working across software, hardware, and mechanical domains. Medical Device and/or other safety critical device experience would be beneficial.

• Strong background in Embedded Systems development and architecture. Experience in system-level engineering or architecture roles would be beneficial.
• Ability to think holistically across disciplines (software, electronics, mechanics).
• Experience with medical devices or regulated environments is beneficial but not essential (automotive, rail, defense, aerospace etc).
• Comfortable making and defending architectural decisions at product level.

Responsibilities:

• Act as System Architect with overall responsibility for the system-level design and technical coherence.
• Translate high-level product requirements into a robust and compliant system architecture.
• Define and allocate product functionality across software, hardware, and mechanical domains, making informed architectural trade-offs.
• Ensure that system designs meet medical device constraints, including regulatory, safety, and validation requirements (e.g. understanding which functions cannot be implemented purely in software).
• Maintain a system-level overview throughout the development lifecycle, ensuring all required functions are correctly realized and integrated.
