Job Description

Airbus Defence and Space is seeking a Data Handling Architect (d/f/m) to support the Avionics Architecture and Lead Germany organisation. The role is responsible for the end‑to‑end development of spacecraft Data Handling Systems, with a specific focus on Mass Memory Formatting Units (MMFU). You will help shape the future of Earth Observation, Science, Space Exploration, Telecommunication and Navigation missions.

Core Missions

  • Architectural Leadership: serve as the central technical authority for On‑Board Data Handling (OBDH), bridging the gap between Chief Engineers, customers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • System Design & Trade‑offs: conduct high‑level trade‑off studies and define hardware architectures that push the boundaries of data throughput and processing speed.
  • End‑to‑End Requirement Engineering: translate complex system‑level needs into precise equipment specifications and manage the technical roadmap with suppliers.
  • Interface Mastery: orchestrate data, electrical and housekeeping interfaces between the spacecraft platform, payload instruments and crypto units.
  • Resource Management: own critical DHS budgets – including TM/TC, bus traffic and processor performance.
  • Validation & Launch: lead the subsystem through electrical/functional testing (AIT), system reviews and remain accountable for performance during launch and in‑orbit testing (IOT).

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering & Information Technology, Aerospace Engineering or a comparable field.
  • Many years of experience in data handling systems.
  • Expertise in data handling hardware subsystem architecture.
  • Experience with data handling system environments such as simulation and CAD.
  • Hands‑on experience with hardware test benches.
  • Knowledge of space standards (e.g. ECSS, CCSDS).
