Responsibilities

  • Instruct school staff in AVID methodologies, practices, and philosophy.
  • Counsel students on their progress in achieving classroom goals and objectives.
  • Adhere to and, when applicable, implement safety and security procedures.
  • Plan and deliver the weekly AVID curriculum while monitoring student progress.
  • Coordinate all AVID program activities, including student recruitment and scheduling.
  • Train school staff in AVID methodologies and conduct parent workshops.

Conditions of Employment

Qualifications

  • Who May Apply: U.S. Citizens
  • State or Territory Certification/License: A valid fully professional state teaching license in content areas or the state's equivalent (as DoDEA determines comparable to DoDEA's teacher categories) will be accepted as fulfilling all qualifications for professional teaching education and certification in content areas. The license must be unencumbered. The Praxis I and II or seven years of teaching at the Pre‑K‑12 level can be substituted and will require all minimum education requirements, student teaching/internship, and full qualification standards to be met. Applicants claiming military spouse preference under the MSLRA will receive consideration for an encumbered license.
  • Minimum Academic Preparation and Requirements: A baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association is required. Academic preparation of at least 40 semester hours (SH) in general education coursework distributed over fields such as English, history, social studies, mathematics, fine arts, languages, science, philosophy, and psychology is required. Additionally, a minimum of 18 SH of professional teacher education coursework in areas such as learning processes, tests and measurement, educational philosophy, psychology, social foundations, methods of teaching, and curriculum applicable to the position is required. (Note: Speech Language Pathologists, Social Workers, School Nurses, Guidance Counselors, School Psychologists, JROTC Instructors, and non-certified Training Instructors are excluded from this requirement.)
  • Student Teaching or Internship: Student teaching or an internship as part of an approved teacher education program in an accredited U.S. institution is required. In the absence of such a program, one year of successful full‑time employment as an educator may be credited. (Note: Speech Language Pathologists, Social Workers, School Nurses, Guidance Counselors, School Psychologists, JROTC Instructors and non-certified Training Instructors are excluded from the student teaching requirement.)
  • 0405‑Teacher, AVID (Secondary): Must have completed a Fall DoDEA‑sponsored AVID Implementation Training (AVID Elective Level I) for the current school year and possess an AVID Center Digital Badge verifying training completion. Must be certified or certifiable in any DoDEA middle school or secondary school content area.
  • Foreign Education: Foreign degrees and coursework from non‑accredited institutions must be evaluated before acceptance. Three acceptable evaluation procedures: 1) Evaluation by the International Education Research Foundation, Inc.; 2) Evaluation by an institution or state department of education with an endorsed list; 3) Evaluation by the graduate division of a regionally accredited university and declared equivalent to U.S. undergraduate or graduate work. Graduates of non‑accredited institutions may have their undergraduate work validated by admission to graduate school and completion of at least 5 SH of credit in a regionally accredited graduate college.
