VIE - Research Engineer Life Cycle Assessment

Innovation Campus Frankfurt, Air Liquide Forschung und Entwicklung GmbH, is one of Air Liquide’s five Innovation Campuses. How you will contribute

You will be part of a team whose main mission is to bridge the gap between laboratory breakthroughs and industrial scale by providing the rigorous assessments needed to steer the innovation toward the most viable and impactful solutions. Your mission goes beyond theoretical research; you will ensure our environmental assessments are grounded in industrial reality, supporting the transition from pilot‑scale innovation to market‑ready, certified solutions.

Potential LCA Study Topics

  • assessment of Air Liquide innovations in terms of their environmental impact, risks and opportunities
  • assessment of various Air Liquide technologies or products in response to internal requests
  • assessment of other technologies or products in response to external customer requests

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with R&D colleagues and internal and external customers to evaluate the environmental impact of their products and technologies.
  • Contribute to decision‑making processes to maximize benefits, limit environmental footprint and anticipate possible risks.
  • Translate technical LCA results into business‑driven insights for non‑experts.

Education

Must have: Master’s Degree in Process or Chemical Engineering, Environmental or Natural Science.

Nice‑to‑have: Specialization in Sustainability, Life Cycle Assessment, or Industrial Ecology.

Hard Skills – Must Haves

  • Good understanding of chemical process engineering and LCA methodology (ISO 14040/14044)
  • Proven experience in LCA using SimaPro, Gabi or OpenLCA
  • Proven experience in the calculation of Carbon Footprint based on an international standard (ISO 14067, GHG Protocol)
  • First practical experience in industry
  • Familiarity with Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and understanding of RFNBO/RCF Delegated Acts

Nice‑to‑Have Skills

  • Programming: Basic Python skills for data automation.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with other directives & regulations & voluntary schemes (EU Taxonomy, CSRD, LCFS, ISCC)
  • End of Life (EOL) modelling: Knowledge of different EOL allocation methods (e.g., Circular Footprint Formula) to evaluate the benefits of recycling critical minerals.

  • Professional appearance and good communication skills with ability to translate technical LCA results into business‑driven insights for non‑experts
  • Quality oriented with a strong analytical mindset

Languages

  • English fluency – must have
  • German – nice to have
  • French – nice to have
