Volunteer - Designer & Digital Artist (Creative Media Division)

TUM-XR is an open community dedicated to shaping the future of Extended Reality (XR) through innovation, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary collaboration between tech and humanities . We bridge the gap between academia and industry, focusing on fields like Spatial Intelligence, Physical AI, Creative Media, and Human-Computer Interfaces. Our mission is to develop real-world applications for emerging technologies while fostering a synergy between tech and the human experience .

The Creative Media Division: What We Do

Our division is at the intersection of art and technology . We don't just build apps; we create experiences. Our work is incredibly diverse, spanning across:

• Immersive Experiences: VR/AR music experiences, Cultural VR journeys, and WebAR artworks.
• Cutting-Edge Visuals: Volumetric video, volumetric displays, holographic fans, and Projection Mapping .
• Interactive Arts: Digital art installations and interactive pieces using motion tracking (Kinect, Leap Motion, etc.).
• Design & Tech: 3D design , Product design , UI/UX , and the creation of Digital Twins.
• Future Tech: Experimenting with Generative AI and VR development using "vibe coding " tools.
• Gaming & Hardware: VR gaming utilizing specialized hardware, such as motion platforms .
• Cultural Collaborations: Working with external partners on high-impact projects, including virtual productions and theater performances .
• Community Building: Hosting art-related events, workshops , and panel discussions .

The Role: Designer & Digital Artist

We are looking for a creative visionary to join our team in Munich. As a Designer & Digital Artist, you will be the visual heartbeat of our projects, turning complex technical concepts into compelling digital narratives.

Your Responsibilities

• Create visually stunning digital artwork and graphics for a wide range of XR projects.
• Contribute to the visual storytelling of our initiative through storyboarding and conceptual brainstorming.
• Work within our evolving tech stack: while we’ve used 8th Wall for WebAR in the past, we are now actively developing our own custom pipeline .
• Utilize industry-standard tools like Unity and Unreal Engine , and explore no-code digital art through TouchDesigner .
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, researchers, and artists to push the boundaries of what is possible in XR.

Qualifications

• Artistic Talent: Proven experience in Digital Art, Digital Painting, and Graphic Design.
• Visual Storytelling: Proficiency in storyboarding and the ability to translate ideas into visual narratives.
• Technical Curiosity: Knowledge or a strong interest in XR technologies (Unity, Unreal Engine, TouchDesigner).
• Collaborative Spirit: A passion for interdisciplinary teamwork and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, student-led environment.
• Presence: Ability to work on-site in Munich to engage with our hardware and local community.
• Experience Plus: Familiarity with motion tracking, WebAR, or generative AI tools is a huge advantage!
