Volunteer: Environmental Conservation in Bali

Location: Ubud, Bali. Duration: Minimum 3 weeks. Cost: 800 for the first 4 weeks, plus 150 for each additional week. Fee includes all food, accommodation, pre‑departure and in‑country support, orientation and all project related activities. Flights, travel insurance, personal spending, visas and vaccinations are not included.

The beautiful Indonesian island of Bali provides an ideal setting to gain experience in innovative environmental work and help ensure that local farmers steer a course of sustainable development.

Role Description

As a participant on the Environmental Internship programme, you will work with a local NGO and Balinese farming communities to improve environmental practices and standards.

Projects & Responsibilities

• Permaculture Workshop Construction – Building a workshop training centre in a primary rainforest, using live trees as main struts. Will assist with construction and maintenance.
• Hydroelectric Plant Project – Building a natural pool filled by runoff from rice paddies, generating hydro‑electric power and providing a tourist attraction.
• Waste‑water Management Projects – Designing, installing and maintaining effective wastewater management systems for restaurants.
• Permaculture Centre – Compost making, wormery maintenance, weeding, and participation in weekly training workshops.
• Mobile Rice Mill – Assisting local staff with milling rice, visiting villages, operating machinery, recording outputs, and troubleshooting.
• Micro‑Infrastructure Construction – Participation in construction and maintenance of biogas, hydro‑electric plants, wormeries, permaculture centres, and other micro‑infrastructure projects.

Open‑ended learning, contribution of new ideas, flexibility to choose projects, and daily life depending on selected projects.
