The University of Bonn is an international research university with a wide education and research profile. With a 200-year history, approximately 31,500 students, more than 6,000 staff, and an excellent reputation at home and abroad, the University of Bonn is one of the most important universities in Germany and is recognized as a University of Excellence.
At the Medical Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the Department of Ophthalmology (Director: Prof. Dr. Frank G. Holz) is seeking a
W2 Endowed Professorship in Digital Medicine and Artificial Intelligence in Ophthalmology
as soon as possible (fixed-term, 5 years).
A nationally and internationally established scientist from the fields of medical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, computational life sciences or related areas is being sought who is able to establish and lead an internationally competitive research group. The candidate must have an excellent scientific track record and relevant collaborations in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine – preferably already relating to retinal diseases and/or ophthalmology.
The research focus may include both the AI-supported analysis and further development of retinal imaging as well as the integration of omics and high-throughput data (e.g. genomics, proteomics, metabolomics). Both approaches share the common goal of translation into clinical application: either by developing MDR (EU Medical Device Regulation) or FDA-certified, innovative medical devices or by identifying new therapy targets based on multimodal data integration. Accordingly, modern machine learning and deep learning methods will be developed and applied within interdisciplinary research networks.
The professorship should also contribute to the generation and supervision of collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects, such as on the AI-based evaluation of large image datasets, the development of telemedicine applications, or the integration of multimodal data platforms. The overarching goal is to strengthen the University Hospital Bonn and the University of Bonn as leading interdisciplinary hub for digitalization and AI in medicine, generating visible scientific impact, both at a national and international level.
Appointment requirements include a university degree in natural science or medicine and have a habilitation or evidence of equivalent academic achievements and experience of teaching in accordance with section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz NRW).
