Major Duties

Provides oversight during initial and extended attack fires, directs fireline activities and tactics of dispersed firefighters, resources, equipment, and aircraft.
Assigns missions to ground and aviation wildland fire suppression resources.
Coordinates with the Dispatch Office regarding current fire behavior and fire conditions, release of resources, and other logistical considerations.
Participates in incident objectives, strategies, and tactics to provide for safe operations and cost-effective incident management.
Develops performance standards and evaluates work performance of subordinates.

Requirements

Must be a U.S. citizen or national.
Suitability for federal employment as determined by background investigation.
Direct deposit required.
Must submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment. Random drug testing may occur.
Must pass a pre‑employment medical examination; may be subject to post‑employment medical examinations.
Must pass a work capacity test for arduous positions.
Driver: Must operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of official duties and hold a valid state driver’s license.
Uniform: Official U.S. Wildland Fire Service uniform required.
Probationary period: One-year supervisory/managerial probationary period required.
Selective Service registration required for applicable individuals.
Age: Must be 18 years or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.
Work schedule: Intermittent; no pre‑scheduled schedule; call for assignments.
Travel: May be required to travel overnight; must obtain a government charge card for travel.
