Offer Description

The Mainz Academy of Fine Arts at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is the only fine arts academy of the state of Rhineland‑Palatinate. It offers the courses of study Liberal Fine Arts (Diplom/Meister) and a teacher training program for fine arts (Bachelor and Master of Education). The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Master of Education (M.Ed.) programs prepare students for teacher training (Referendariat) at high schools and comprehensive schools, as well as for art education work in museums and exhibitions, cultural institutions, and other areas of cultural education. Graduates of the M.Ed. program may pursue a Ph.D. Faculty members in the Department of Art Education at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts teach, learn, and conduct research together with students at the intersection of art and education.

Independent research in the field of art education with the goal of earning a Ph.D.

• Teaching duties amounting to 2 SWS, to be carried out in art‑education methodology seminars.
• Assistance with day‑to‑day operations of the Chair of Art Education at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts, e.g., maintaining the alumni network and the cooperation network, and managing the future Art Education website.
• Participation in academic self‑governance.
• Further development and promotion of the department through personal areas of focus.

Qualifications

• A completed academic degree in one or more of the following fields: Art Education, Cultural Education, Arts, or Educational Science with a focus on aesthetics and the arts, or a comparable field.
• Interest in developing practice and theory in cultural education, art education, and art pedagogy from a perspective critical of discrimination and grounded in the arts.
• Practical experience in cultural education, art education, and art pedagogy, at least partially in a school setting.
• Well‑developed skills in written and oral communication, structuring workflows, self‑directed work, pedagogical work, and teamwork.
• Very good command of the German language, both spoken and written (at least B2 level).

Desirable

• Experience in online and open‑source publishing, and website development (WordPress).
• Academic positioning within one or more of the following theoretical frameworks: queer‑feminist, anti‑racist, critical whiteness, postcolonial, and decolonial studies.
• Experience in planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting academic‑artistic and educational events.
• Willingness to travel for work.

The position is paid according to EG 13 TV‑L and will be filled immediately. The contract is temporary, part‑time, with 19.5 hours per week, and lasts for 3 years (with a possible extension of up to 3 years). It is intended to support academic qualification (Ph.D.).

The position is located in the city of Mainz (postal code 55122). The address is Saarstr. 21, 55122 Mainz, Germany. Teaching takes place on‑site during lecture periods at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts.
