Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. The part-time position (75%) is available at the Institute of Geography of the Faculty 09 of Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Geography and Geosciences in the research group Digital Cultures .

Current research topics include: geographies of knowledge and expertise in times of digitization and social media, (user) innovation, new forms and spaces of work, the impact of digital media on crisis perception and response, coping with uncertainties and non-knowledge. Qualitative social science methods and (online)ethnography are key methodological approaches of the research group.

• Research for the own academic qualification aligned with the research topics of the research group (doctorate)
• Participation in activities of the research group (e.g. organisation of workshops, networking activities)
• Teaching of courses in the study programmes of the Institute of Geography (3 semester hours per week)
• Organisation/assessment of exams in the geography study programmes
• A successfully completed university degree (Master level) in geography with a focus on economic or human geography or a related discipline with very good results
• Knowledge and first experiences in the application of qualitative research methods
• Very good language skills in German and English (written and spoken)
• Interest in empirical as well as theoretical work concerning space-related questions
• Interest and willingness to contribute to interdisciplinary research fields and debates

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The position is paid according to EG 13 TV-L and to be filled by 10/1/2026. The position is limited to a period of 3 years.

The position serves the purpose of academic qualification (doctorate).
