This company has built a Skyscanner-style platform for full container load sea freight from Asia into Northern Europe. Real rates, expected quality, and the whole execution layer of carriers, ports, customs agents and trucking bundled into something a customer can book and run themselves, rather than waiting on a forwarder to assemble it by hand.
They went from 12 people to 44 in eighteen months, funded off their own performance, and are heading to around 60. Germany is the next market, and this is the first Account Manager seat in the country.
You are not starting from zero. Five German colleagues are already selling into the market with proven systems behind them. You are the first person to own what happens after those deals land.
What's strong
- The big accounts are still up for grabs. Tiering is not yet rigid, so you get at large customers early rather than being parked on a small-account desk for two years
- This is a commercial seat, not a harvester desk. NRR ownership, account plans, share of wallet growth
- Equity for every employee, with the option to take more in exchange for salary. People who joined eighteen months ago are sitting on a six times increase
- Direct reporting line to the Head of Finance and the commercial lead in the interim, which is unusual access for an AM
- More AMs follow on a regional model as the pods build, so you are first rather than newest
What's demanding
- There is a real operational load. Most quoting is automated but Germany still has more manual work than the Netherlands, and the automation push is still building
- Systems are being adapted to Germany while you use them. If you need settled process, this will frustrate you
- Travel matters more for this first hire than it will for the ones who follow, because the coverage is practically concentrated in NRW
- Office-first in Düsseldorf. Genuinely flexible around customer visits and real commitments, but the default is that you are in
The role
- Take over maturing accounts from the AE and grow them
- Build the relationship, write the account plan, map the customer organisation and embed across it so more volume routes through the platform
- Book of roughly 100 to 200 accounts depending on size
- Target metric is Net Revenue Retention, set against the headroom in the book you inherit rather than a flat number. Accounts already fully committed carry a different expectation to accounts at ten percent share of wallet
- New business is allowed but not part of the target. If you close one, it gets folded in by discussion
Requirements
- At least one freight forwarding employer on your CV. Not your whole career, but you need to know how the industry actually works
- 2 to 4 years of relevant industry experience, stretching to 5
- Commercial mindset. You know how to build an account plan, map a customer organisation and grow share of wallet. Closing experience is not required
- Deliberate thinking about the commercial process. A framework is not the point, the consciousness behind it is
- Self-starting and genuinely flexible, comfortable building while flying
- Willing to travel to customers across regions
- German, business English
Nice to have
- Sales or closing experience
- MEDDIC or a comparable methodology
- Background at a digital forwarder
- Hunter instinct, the sort who gets inside an account and keeps finding reasons to grow it
Package
€50K to €70K base, €80K to €90K OTE, commission tied to NRR and currently uncapped. Shares for every employee, handled case by case. Pool cars at the Düsseldorf office for people working from there.
If you like freight but have outgrown the culture of a traditional forwarder, this is the seat to look at.
