Associate Director, Philanthropy

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage multi‑year strategies and plans for the cultivation and solicitation of gift prospects, including corporate, foundation, institutional, and individual donors.
  • Build and maintain long‑term relationships with new and existing donors and prospects.
  • Cultivate donors from annual giving to major or planned gifts and make direct asks to global and local priorities to meet funding needs.
  • Discuss and advise on assets, non‑cash gifts (planned gifts, trade lands), blended gifts, and gifts of assets in proposals.
  • Link donor interests to Conservancy priorities, using a deep understanding of organizational budgets to build proposal budgets.
  • Apply knowledge of private foundations, operating foundations, and Donor Advised Funds in fundraising conversations.
  • Collaborate across chapters and programs, manage a referral network, and staff chapter leadership as a moves manager as needed.
  • Manage assigned trustee relationships and volunteer engagement.
  • Operate the Conservancy’s donor database and track prospect activity.
  • Travel frequently and on short notice; work long hours and weekends as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of related experience.
  • Experience building and maintaining long‑term relationships with major donors and corporations.
  • Experience asking for and closing gifts of $75,000 or more, including planned gifts.
  • Experience managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Experience with fundraising principles and practices.
  • Experience, coursework, or training in current trends in charitable giving, particularly capital campaigns, major gifts, and planned giving.

Desired Qualifications

  • Multilingual skills and cross‑cultural experience.
  • Ability to design and implement fundraising strategies, including cultivation, solicitation, and recognition strategies.
  • Ability to determine an individual’s interests, capacity, and potential for supporting the Conservancy’s goals, and align those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
  • Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
  • Advanced knowledge of complex charitable gift planning.
  • Demonstrated listening, diplomacy, and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
  • Proven ability to negotiate complex, high‑profile, or sensitive agreements.
