Automotive UX Researcher – Navigation & Mapping

We are looking for an experienced Automotive Navigation & Map Visualization Research Consultant to join an international team working on the future of in-vehicle navigation and digital map experiences. This role combines UX research, automotive expertise, competitive benchmarking, and real-world validation to help shape next-generation navigation solutions used by leading automotive brands.

Project:

Our client is a global leader in location technology, delivering navigation, mapping, and location intelligence solutions for the automotive and mobility industries. The project focuses on researching and improving how navigation guidance and map visualization are designed and experienced inside modern vehicles.

As part of the Cartography Design team, you will analyze navigation systems, benchmark industry solutions, validate user experiences during real driving scenarios, and transform research findings into practical recommendations for product and design teams.

Your responsibilities:

• Analyze and benchmark automotive navigation systems across OEMs and technology providers.
• Research navigation guidance, lane-level visualization, map interfaces, and driver interaction patterns.
• Evaluate how different solutions communicate routing, lane guidance, traffic situations, and driver attention.
• Conduct real-world validation through driving sessions and scenario-based testing.
• Document findings using screenshots, videos, journey logs, and structured research materials.
• Create benchmark reports, comparison frameworks, design recommendations, and pattern libraries.
• Collaborate with UX designers, researchers, and product teams to support future product decisions.

Requirements:

• Experience in one or more of the following areas: UX Research, Design Research, Human Factors / HCI, Service Design Research, Automotive UX, Navigation Systems, In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI), Driver Experience, Mobility Research, Information Visualization, Mapping or Geospatial Products.
• Strong analytical and research skills.
• Experience conducting competitive benchmarking and synthesizing complex information.
• Ability to present insights in a structured and actionable way.
• Driving licence (required).
• Willingness to combine remote work with several on-site collaboration days per month in Berlin.

Nice to have:

• Experience working with automotive OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers.
• Knowledge of HD maps and lane-level navigation.
• Experience with usability testing in automotive environments.
• Passion for mobility, navigation, and digital map technologies.
