Chief Engineer - Data Center Engineering Operations (m/f), DC Engineering and Facility Operations

Amazon is looking for a talented, detail‑oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations Team in Frankfurt. This team maintains critical physical infrastructure that supports Amazon Web Services, ensuring the data center’s MEP operates at 100 % availability while delivering excellent customer service to team members and groups within the data centers.

Key Job Responsibilities

• Ensure that all electrical, mechanical and fire/life safety equipment within the data center operates at peak efficiency through planned preventive maintenance, daily corrective work and emergency response.
• Act as the singular focal point for all facility operations and support Amazon within its owned and operated data centers.
• Manage large‑scale projects and new region support from conception to completion, collaborating with engineering, automation, procurement and finance teams locally and globally.
• Create and deliver on key milestones, obtain and track quotes for necessary costs, and document project results for future implementation.
• Train and support the Engineering team in electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operations.
• Execute site‑specific training exercises, including stand‑by diesel generators, switchgear, UPS, PDU, AHU, chillers, etc.
• Oversee day‑to‑day operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in data centers.
• Operate independently with limited direct management and act as an escalation point for all facility‑related issues within the region, performing overtime hours as needed.
• Perform root‑cause analysis of equipment failures and troubleshoot/report facility and data‑center‑level events within internal SLA.
• Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers and vendor support teams.
• Assist in recruiting efforts for the same.
• Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendor and Amazon staff.
• Provide metric availability reporting on a weekly basis.

Physical Requirements

• Work at heights and from ladders.
• Perform physical tasks during the shift.
• Work in a noisy environment with ear protection.

Competencies

• Proven experience in reading schematic layout drawings and control schematics.
• Ability to follow support procedures, system documentation and issue tracking entries in a trouble‑ticket system.
• Ability to prioritize in a complex, fast‑paced environment.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Experience in vendor management.
• Experience in a data center or other critical environment.
• Experience in data center engineering or operations.
• Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word and Excel).

Preferred Qualifications

• Electrical or mechanical Journeyman license.
• Operating engineering license such as DC II, DC III or equivalent.
• Experience in construction or project management.
