We are supporting an innovative deep-tech engineering company developing next-generation high-energy systems and advanced experimental platforms. Due to continued project expansion, we are seeking an experienced Control Systems Engineer to join a multidisciplinary engineering team on an initial 12-month freelance contract.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work on technically challenging projects involving complex automation, high-performance control systems and sophisticated experimental equipment within a cutting-edge R&D environment.
The Role
You will be responsible for the design, implementation and optimisation of advanced control systems supporting highly complex electromechanical and automated platforms. Working alongside electrical, mechanical, software and systems engineers, you will develop reliable, high-performance control solutions for state-of-the-art experimental facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop control system architectures for complex engineering systems.
- Develop PLC, motion control and industrial automation solutions.
- Integrate sensors, actuators, drives and fieldbus communication networks.
- Develop machine control software and automation sequences.
- Commission and optimise automated equipment and control systems.
- Troubleshoot hardware and software issues during commissioning and testing.
- Support electrical integration, system validation and acceptance testing.
- Produce functional specifications, electrical documentation and technical reports.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure systems comply with relevant functional safety and engineering standards.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience designing and commissioning industrial control systems.
- Strong PLC programming experience (Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCAT, B&R or equivalent).
- Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Profinet, EtherCAT, CAN, Modbus or OPC UA.
- Experience integrating servo drives, motion control systems and industrial automation equipment.
- Strong fault-finding and commissioning experience.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Precision motion control.
- Robotics and automated machinery.
- Laboratory or experimental test facilities.
- Real-time control systems.
- SCADA or HMI development.
- Python, C++ or MATLAB.
- Functional Safety (IEC 61508, IEC 62061, ISO 13849).
- Vacuum systems or high-voltage equipment.
- Commissioning of complex R&D equipment.
