Data Platform Engineer (m/f/d) for the European AI Factory HammerHAI
Data Platform Engineer role in the European AI Factory focusing on AI, HPC, and data analytics environments.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain software and data environments for AI, HPC, and data analytics use cases involving modern AI hardware (GPUs, CPUs, AI accelerators).
- Contribute to the evolving software stack and service portfolio of the AI Factory within an international team.
- Support development of the platform that allows HammerHAI customers to access and provide AI datasets and models.
- Engage with collaboration partners and stakeholders from the European AI ecosystem, applying communication skills.
- Collaborate on national and European AI R&D projects across private and academic sectors.
- Maintain relationships with technology providers and system developers (software/hardware).
Basic Qualifications
- PhD or Master’s degree in computer or data science or related scientific computing field; OR Bachelor’s degree with more than two years of applied software development, platform engineering, deployment experience, or AI data‑management workflows as a senior engineer in research or enterprise environments.
Other Requirements
- Proficiency working in data center environments (Linux servers, Python, Git, GitLab).
- Proven experience designing, deploying, and maintaining end‑to‑end AI/ML software stacks on HPC, cloud, or hybrid environments across the full lifecycle from data ingestion to model deployment.
- Extensive knowledge and experience developing and maintaining software and data environments for AI, HPC, and data analytics use cases, including:
- Kubernetes (or other cluster scheduling/orchestration frameworks)
- MLOps tools (e.g., Kubeflow, ClearML, MLflow)
- Data management platforms (e.g., piveau)
- Ability to design and operate data management workflows, integrating with data platforms, model hubs, data spaces, and external repositories via standardized interfaces and APIs.
- Willingness to stay current with AI developments and learn new technologies.
- Excellent English and preferably German presentation and writing skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced understanding of high‑performance object storage and RDMA, and how to leverage these in platform/software development.
- Solid understanding of data governance, access control, privacy, and regulatory compliance in European contexts, with experience handling sensitive and domain‑specific data.
- Experience testing, benchmarking, and optimizing software components for scalability, performance, and usability in large‑scale AI environments.
- Experience with agile development methods and CI/CD.
Conditions
Area: Big Data and Artificial Intelligence
Working time: Full time (40 hrs) / part‑time possible, flexible working model with electronic time recording.
Term of contract: End of Q1/2028, further employment intended.
Remuneration: Up to E13 (see TV‑L scale).
Annual leave / compensatory time off: 30 days (plus additional days on 24 Dec and 31 Dec).
Overtime: Compensated by additional time off.
Further trainings: Individual support for in‑service training and further education.
Mobile work: Up to 60 % of work time when applicable.
