Data Systems Engineer (m/f/d) Ref. No. 26-84015

We are looking for a number of Data Systems Engineers to join our team and support the Copernicus missions run by ESA at ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany.

The majority of the Data Systems engineering support is related to mission preparation and operation. In addition, the support covers application, system support and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

As a Data Systems Engineer, your tasks will typically include:

  • Specification of the software requirements of these systems in collaboration with the operational users;
  • Appropriate coordination and collaboration with any external community involved in the data system operations;
  • Define and oversee the evolution of the mission control systems in response to flight control team needs, software infrastructure and hardware evolution,
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of problems identified in the operational systems,
  • Tests and simulation campaign, and in the role of the software coordinator being part of the Flight Control Team during critical operational phases such as launches;
  • Proactively supporting the continual service delivery,
  • Support day-to-day incident management and response via an On-Call Service during normal working hours
  • Maintenance of software such as SCOS-2000 based Mission Control Systems and/or related systems such as EDDS, EGOS-MPS, DARC or similar support.
  • Support to customers related to ground software systems development.
  • Support to the Flight Control Team and operations, participating in related meetings and long-term planning.

This is a full-time position to be located at Terma's premises in Darmstadt with the planned start date on the 1st of July 2027.

Qualifications & Competencies

Applicable experience in the provision of data systems engineering support is an advantage. Experience related to any of the Copernicus Sentinel missions is particularly desirable.

In addition to having a university degree in a relevant engineering field, astronomy, mathematics, or physics, you should be able to cover many of the following topics:

Ideally you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience in Software engineering methods and tools used in development of data processing systems
  • Definition, implementation, validation, and operation of software which applies the above solutions (using e.g., Unix/Linux scripting languages, C++, Java, Python).
  • Ability to understand user needs in complex software systems
  • Knowledge of Earth Observation Mission Control Systems
  • Knowledge of SCOS-2000 and/or related systems such as EDDS, EGOS-MPS, DARC or similar
  • A service-oriented attitude towards end users/operation customers is essential
  • Medium/Advanced experience in Linux based systems
  • Familiarity with the ESOC environment.
  • Experience with Data Systems engineering tasks.
  • Experience dealing with external interfaces.
  • Familiarity with ITIL application management delivery
  • Experience with the next generation of data systems such as EGS-CC-based systems.
  • Experience with Linux, network services and protocols, and system administration.
  • Multi-task efficiently; working on multiple activities, multiple subsystems and if applicable multiple missions simultaneously.

Fluency in English (written and spoken) is mandatory. You will have the capability to work in teams, while at the same time being a self-starter, able to work independently with little supervision.

Due to the variety of tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported, you should be able to quickly adapt to changes in assignments, manage tasks in an efficient way, and demonstrate a high degree of independence and autonomy. You must have excellent analytical skills, and be effective working within a small team, and have good presentation and communication skills.

You should be able to conduct all your activities in an orderly and disciplined manner, encouraging a friendly and collaborative working environment, demonstrating capabilities in applying principles, handling critical discourse, and be open to discussing and sharing solutions with others. Moreover, you must be able to participate actively in technical meetings and/or formal reviews and activity assessments.
