The Faculty of Natural Sciences invites applications for the position of a

Full Professor (W3) of Food Microbiology

at the Institute of Food Science and Biotechnology starting in the summer semester 2028.

The successful candidate is to comprehensively represent the subject of food microbiology in research, teaching, and knowledge transfer. The professorship is to focus on one of the following research areas:

• 1. Analysis, use, and application of microbial starter cultures for various substrates such as plant-based or animal-based raw materials (microbial fermentation, OMICS technology and bioinformatics analysis, molecular biology)
• 2. Food safety, in particular of new food (microbial virulence and pathomechanisms including related analysis techniques)
• 3. Microbiological principles of food conservation and preservation
• 4. Functional analysis of microbial consortia in food

The professor teaches all courses on theory and practical training in the area of food microbiology for the institute’s German- and English-language Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. In addition, it is expected that the professor will teach in the related degree programs of Nutritional Science and Food Chemistry. For international applications, the successful candidate is expected to acquire German language skills within a reasonable period of time.

The successful candidate will have internationally visible research, credentials with relevant publications in high-ranking journals, and the ability to raise third-party funds.

The position offers attractive conditions for first-time full professor appointees. Prerequisites for applicants are a habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) or an equivalent research and teaching record.
