Head of Bike Mechanics

Upway is a fast growing startup building the largest marketplace for refurbished electric bikes, now present in 6 Upcenters across Europe and the United States, with operations in Berlin and Dusseldorf, Germany.

We are looking for a Head of Bike Mechanics to oversee our largest global Upcenter in Berlin, where a team of around 40 mechanics repairs and refurbishes used e‑bikes to provide customers with high‑quality and extensive selection.

As Head of Mechanics , you will manage the entire repair process, ensure delivery in excellent quality, and scale the team—doubling its size over the next two years—through recruitment, leadership, and performance development.

Your role includes leading a well‑equipped team, maintaining operational excellence, and directly impacting Upway’s overall productivity and e‑bike repair quality.

Tasks

• Recruit and build a successful team of bike mechanics.
• Manage and lead the team, assessing and organizing workload while maintaining high motivation.
• Develop Mechanic Team Leads and oversee their performance and development.
• Inspect, repair, and perform quality control on various e‑bike brands and models.
• Build and maintain a solid training program for onboarding and upskilling mechanics.
• Manage spare parts inventory to ensure rapid repairs, with support from the Spare Parts Specialist.
• Ensure every bike meets the highest quality standards and contribute to staff training.

Requirements

• Mechanical Expertise : 7+ years as a bike mechanic, problem‑solving complex issues, and improving repair processes.
• Team Management : 2+ years leading a mechanic team, hiring and managing skilled staff.
• Continuous Improvement : Increase team efficiency through processes and organization.
• Inventory Management : Build and manage complex spare parts inventory.
• Planning & Organisation : Strong organizational skills and ability to work at high pace.
• Leadership : Results‑oriented, decisive, focused on customer satisfaction.
• Communication : Fluent German, good English, other languages a plus.
