Head of Grid

Our client is seeking an experienced Head of Grid to lead the grid connection strategy for a growing portfolio of renewable energy and energy storage projects. This is a senior leadership position responsible for securing grid capacity, shaping connection strategies and acting as the primary technical interface with Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs).

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver the overall grid connection strategy across a portfolio of renewable energy and energy storage projects.
• Assess prospective project locations based on available network capacity, connection opportunities and technical feasibility.
• Provide strategic guidance on grid availability, connection risks and capacity optimisation to support investment decisions.
• Act as the primary technical representative with Distribution System Operators (DSOs), Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and other key network stakeholders.
• Lead discussions relating to connection applications, network studies, technical requirements, connection offers and delivery programmes.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders to support successful project outcomes.
• Serve as the organisation's subject matter expert on power systems, grid infrastructure and connection processes.
• Review network studies, connection assessments and technical documentation to identify risks, constraints and opportunities.
• Provide technical direction throughout project development, engineering and delivery phases.
• Support development teams by evaluating new project opportunities from a grid perspective.
• Contribute to site selection, due diligence and investment decisions through detailed grid analysis.
• Develop practical solutions to overcome grid connection challenges and improve project viability.
• Monitor changes in grid regulations, industry standards and market developments.
• Provide technical input into regulatory consultations and industry initiatives where required.
• Identify opportunities to improve grid access strategies in line with evolving market conditions.

Experience

• Significant experience within electricity networks, power systems or renewable energy infrastructure.
• Proven expertise in grid connections gained with a DSO, TSO, utility, engineering consultancy or renewable energy developer.
• Experience supporting Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), renewable generation or other grid-connected infrastructure is highly desirable.
• Previous leadership or management experience is advantageous.
• Strong understanding of transmission and distribution networks, grid connection processes and power system fundamentals.
• Experience reviewing network studies, connection offers and technical specifications.
• Working knowledge of grid codes, connection standards and electricity market structures.
• Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
• Strong commercial awareness with the ability to influence technical and strategic decisions.
• Analytical mindset with exceptional problem-solving abilities.
• Confident communicator, capable of presenting complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Professional fluency in German and English is essential.

Qualifications

• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional accreditation is desirable.
