German Aerospace Center (DLR)

Internship in Electrical Engineering/Physics/Information Technology/etc. (Satellite communication)

Stellenbeschreibung:

The DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation is dedicated to mission-oriented research in selected areas of communications and navigation. Its work ranges from the theoretical foundations to the demonstration of new procedures and systems in a real environment and is embedded in DLR's Space, Aeronautics, Transport, Security and Digitalization programmes.

What To Expect

The Optical Technologies for Satellite Links group at DLR’s Institute of Communications and Navigation develops experimental laser communication systems for optical data links between airborne carriers such as airplanes or satellites and optical ground stations as well as demonstrator platforms for testbed system verifications. The integrated circuits development covers several disciplines such as photonics, electronics and programming.

The successful applicant will join our team in the development of integrated optical systems for very-high-throughput satellite communications and ranging applications. To address the unique challenge of designing the next generation of optical transceivers, she/he/they will investigate various approaches to characterizing high-speed transmission components. The main focus of the work is to evaluate performance of selected photonic devices as well as to investigate their compatibility and interoperability with an overall optical communications system.

It is an excellent opportunity to work in a cutting-edge topic, gain experience on testing integrated photonic devices, and improve your engineering skills.

Your tasks

  • Investigate performance of several key components and sub-systems of high-speed optical transceivers.
  • Characterize both custom (PIC-based) and commercial (COTS) integrated photonic devices through laboratory testing.
  • Validate component/system-level functionality and select optimal operating conditions in the context of the overall system requirements.
  • Understand and automate transceiver control signals and interfaces.
  • Program supporting Python test routines and tools.

We look forward to getting to know you!
