PhD Student : Energy & Environment Cluster

KIST Europe Forschungsgesellschaft mbH ( located in Saarbrücken, Germany, invites applications for PhD positions in the Energy & Environment Cluster. The position focuses on interdisciplinary research at the interface of energy systems and environmental sustainability.

Initial appointment is for 1 year, with the possibility of extension to a total duration of up to 3 years. Salary is according to the German State Regulated Public Salary Scale (TV‑L E13, 50%).

Responsibilities

• Engage in interdisciplinary research combining materials synthesis, environmental and analytical characterization, and electrochemical performance evaluation.
• Contribute to the development of sustainable and low‑impact energy technologies.
• Collaborate with leading academic partners such as Saarland University, RWTH Aachen University, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and other universities depending on the specific research topic and supervision.
• Conduct analytical chemistry and environmental monitoring for PFAS and other trace contaminants, including sample preparation.
• Generate data under varying process conditions and perform environmental impact assessment (LCA/TEA).
• Design battery recycling processes, including electrochemical processes, and model the processes with mass/energy analysis.
• Develop electrolytes and electrode materials for next‑generation batteries and water electrolysis, and integrate them with a digital twin framework.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
• Proficiency in English.
