Laser Metrology Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Laser Metrology Engineer to develop and optimise laser-based measurement systems for demanding industrial dimensional and positioning applications.

This is a hands‑on engineering role for a specialist with strong experience in laser interferometry, displacement measurement and optical sensor technologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and optimise laser-based measurement systems for high-precision dimensional and positioning applications.
• Design and implement laser interferometry and displacement measurement solutions.
• Perform optical alignment and optimise laser beam paths for accuracy and stability.
• Select, characterise and integrate photodetectors, optical sensors and laser components .
• Develop and optimise signal-processing techniques for extracting high-accuracy measurement data.
• Characterise system performance, including accuracy, repeatability, resolution and stability.
• Investigate measurement errors, noise and environmental influences and implement corrective solutions.
• Perform calibration and validation of laser metrology systems against defined performance requirements.
• Develop measurement procedures, test methods and technical specifications.
• Analyse experimental and measurement data using appropriate software and programming tools.
• Integrate optical, electronic, mechanical and software components into complete measurement systems.
• Support prototype development, laboratory testing and transition of measurement technologies into industrial applications.
• Troubleshoot complex optical and measurement‑system issues and lead root‑cause investigations.
• Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, suppliers and customers where required.
• Provide technical input into system design reviews and continuous improvement activities.

Requirements

• Degree or equivalent experience in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Metrology or a related technical discipline.
• Several years of experience developing laser-based measurement or optical metrology systems.
• Strong practical knowledge of laser interferometry and displacement measurement .
• Experience with laser alignment, photodetectors and optical sensors.
• Understanding of analogue/digital signal processing and measurement data analysis.
• Experience with calibration, system characterisation and measurement uncertainty.
• Strong experimental and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience integrating optical and electronic measurement components.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Comfortable working in multidisciplinary industrial or R&D environments.
