Lead Controls Engineer (m/f/d)

As Lead Controls Engineer for Fluence’s BESS portfolio in the EMEA region, you act as the technical authority on controls systems to ensure reliable performance and grid compliance. You collaborate with customers, service teams, and engineering to drive issue resolution and continuous improvement, shaping long-term asset reliability. You will lead software/firmware upgrades, testing, and documentation, while promoting data-driven optimization. This role offers impactful work across international projects and a chance to influence controls strategy at scale.

• Lead controls activities for operational BESS projects ensuring technical, contractual, and regulatory compliance
• Serve as primary controls SME for customers, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex controls, software, and system integration issues
• Lead root cause analyses and implement corrective/preventive actions to improve reliability
• Oversee software and firmware upgrades including safe deployment, testing, and change management
• Coordinate and support grid code compliance testing across the EMEA fleet
• Drive prioritization and resolution of controls-related improvements and software enhancements
• Maintain controls documentation, deployment records, and functional descriptions
• Promote continuous improvement through data-driven analysis and best-practice adoption
• Stay informed on product, software, and industry developments relevant to controls and energy storage systems

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation, Controls Engineering, or related field
• 6+ years of experience in controls engineering, automation, software, or power systems in utilities/renewable energy/energy storage
• Strong knowledge of power systems, grid codes, EMS applications, and grid services
• Experience with SCADA and industrial communication protocols (IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, TCP/IP)
• Experience with PLCs, RTUs, SEL and Siemens protection/automation equipment, and SCADA systems
• Proficiency in Linux, Python, Bash/Shell, and GitHub (version control)
• Experience with Simulink, model-based engineering, and C/C++ preferred
• Knowledge of high-voltage equipment (inverters, transformers, controllers, telecoms, I/O)
• Proven ability to solve complex technical issues, manage priorities, influence stakeholders
• Excellent communication and customer-facing skills
• Experience using CMMS and leveraging operational data for improvement
• English fluent; German or other European languages advantageous
