Linux System Administrator (m/f/d) Ref. No. 26-82195

In this role you will manage and optimize EUMETSAT's operational IT core services. You work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure reliable, scalable infrastructure across Linux, IBM AIX, and virtualization platforms. You will drive incident response, system tuning, and automation to support mission-critical satellite data services. The position offers hands-on work with cloud and IaC tooling, shaping robust, automated environments for production. A strong focus on documentation, collaboration, and continuous improvement anchors the role.

• Single point of contact for incidents and anomalies via ticketing system for operational systems
• Install and configure OS and software, tune system parameters for performance
• Analyze, plan, and performance-tune hardware and software installations ensuring subsystem compatibility
• Monitor system performance and investigate HW/SW issues and apply corrective actions
• Ensure recoverability of operational configuration after HW or SW failures, maintain backups
• Coordinate with external HW/SW maintenance providers for interventions
• Administer user accounts, disk quotas, and provide technical user support
• Support software development and maintenance on system-related matters; automate scripts/procedures and document upgrades
• Provide cloud systems administration and maintenance (routine operations, monitoring, patching, upgrading)
• Design, maintain and improve infrastructure automation strategies
• Provide end-user cloud support and guidance for best utilization and use-case improvement
• Develop, enhance and maintain IaC scripts (Terraform, Ansible) for provisioning and management
• Follow change control and maintenance procedures for day-to-day activities

• Academic degree in IT, Computer Science or equivalent
• IBM AIX or GNU/Linux operating systems
• Virtualization technologies (VMware, NSX, PowerVC)
• Cloud infrastructure (OpenStack, Kubernetes)
• Automation (Ansible) and monitoring (CheckMK, Nagios)
• Production environment operation
• Network and storage infrastructure understanding
• End-to-end system change definition/implementation/testing and documentation in English
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; mentoring and technical guidance
