Massimilla & Schranze, part of The Hanover Insurance Company Staff Counsel organization in New England, is currently seeking an experienced litigation attorney to join our dynamic and growing team. Our attorneys may work remotely or hybrid (from Plymouth, Massachusetts or Worcester, Massachusetts).

Position Overview

This attorney will handle the defense of automobile and general liability personal injury cases from receipt until conclusion through dismissal, settlement or trial. While you will have the flexibility to independently manage your caseload and calendar, you will have support from other attorneys as well as trial specialists, paralegals, secretaries, and other support staff. Admission in good standing to the Massachusetts Bar. Additional licenses in New England a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in all facets of litigation, including preparing responsive pleadings, issuing and responding to written discovery, interviewing witnesses, preparing for and attending or conducting court hearings, depositions, settlement conferences, mediations, arbitrations and/or trial
  • Research legal issues and evaluate the case in terms of liability, damages and exposure, and communicate findings with clients and Claims professionals
  • Regularly and timely communicate with clients and Claims professionals to discuss case status and case resolution strategies
  • Proactively move cases forward toward resolution
  • Participate in roundtable discussions of cases with Staff Counsel managers, Claims managers, Claims adjusters and others
  • Negotiate settlements and prepare settlement agreements
  • Work with other Hanover attorneys, paralegals and support staff to accomplish goals and objectives of the Staff Counsel organization

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience litigating automobile, general liability and Personal Injury Protection claims
  • Licensed in good standing with the Massachusetts Bar
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Massachusetts as needed
  • Team orientation; ability to work with attorneys, adjusters, claims professionals and support staff
  • Computer literacy, including MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, and daily management of e‑mail and calendar
  • Solid advocacy skills to assist, defend or plead for another on moderately complex cases
  • Negotiation skills to influence claim outcomes through effective techniques
  • Strong communication skills to translate legal language into layperson terms
  • Decision‑making ability to reach determinations in moderate to complex situations
  • Organizational skills to categorize and prioritize work and information effectively
  • Investigative skills to follow up step by step on inquiry and examine with accuracy
  • Legal research proficiency in locating case law, statutes and regulations
  • Courtroom competence, proper decorum, knowledge of rules and regulations governing proceedings
  • Commitment to career development and maintaining necessary skill levels
  • Evidence‑based trial experience and ability to present evidence before judge or jury
  • Knowledge of current and future trends and policies affecting The Hanover Insurance Group’s businesses, especially property and casualty insurance
  • Agility and adaptability to unexpected challenges
  • Willingness to mentor and teach others
