We are currently recruiting for an open-topic PhD position (funded) in housing studies (sociology of housing) at the University of Stuttgart, to be undertaken in close collaboration with me. I am seeking a dedicated individual who is keen to help shape the future of housing studies at our institute. Based at one of Germany’s largest and most exciting schools of architecture and urban planning, the position is located in an attractive city surrounded by vineyards and in close proximity to the Black Forest… Our new Sociology of Architecture and Housing unit is friendly and collegial; knowledge of German is not required. I particularly welcome PhD projects that critically engage with the causes and consequences of housing inequality; situate the housing question within the context of class inequality; explore new forms of housing; or develop and apply innovative methodological approaches (both quantitative and qualitative).

A few details on the position, particularly as the German university system differs from many international contexts:

• The position is open to candidates wishing to pursue research in housing studies with the aim of obtaining a doctoral qualification.
• Alongside their doctoral research, the candidate will contribute to the department’s teaching and research activities.
• The post is initially offered as a three-year contract. This is not a stipend but a formal employment contract within the public sector (E13 TV-L, 75%), including pension contributions, health insurance, and an annual special payment. The approximate take‑home salary is around €2,250 per month in the first year, increasing to +€2,400 thereafter (net). An extension of the employment contract may be possible.
• We provide comprehensive supervision of the doctoral project, support in developing an academic profile and visibility, as well as financial support for relevant housing datasets (where required), networking, and conference travel.
• A very good command of English is required.
