Part-Time Lecturer in Interactive Media Arts

New York University (NYU) Berlin is seeking a part‑time lecturer for a course called \"Augmenting the Gallery. \" The course is offered by NYU Berlin in conjunction with the ITP/IMA Department of the Tisch School of the Arts.

The course is taught in English and runs approximately from January 18 to May 5, 2027. The course meets once per week for three-and-a-half hours on NYU Berlin's arts campus at St. Agnes. The sessions are a mixture of lectures, discussions, practical exercises, and guest visits and excursions.

Within the physical walls of GLAMs (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums), we're used to seeing traditional wall labels, audio guides, and maps that don't move. As cultural institutions confront the impacts of shifting 21st-century audience demands and the reach of artificial intelligence, those staples of the past are no longer enough. How can creative technologists design digital experiences that extend works of art without turning a traditional physical exhibition space into a tech demo, or abandoning it all together? Thinking further, how can digital tools expand upon the power and importance of a collection of artworks without distracting from it, or even purposefully challenge a collection's problematic aspects? And how can these tools make collections more accessible to a wider audience?

This course mobilizes resources from media studies, museography, art history, sociology, interaction design, and web design and development to answer these questions. The course is open to students from a variety of academic backgrounds interested in gaining hands‑on experience in applying new technologies to virtual exhibitions and cultural heritage, and participants complete the course with a portfolio‑ready project that they'll present to industry representatives in Berlin.

Qualifications

Candidates should be passionate about teaching, fluent in English, and have an academic background that reflects the course themes. Important is a broad academic outlook and the ability to cater to the individual needs of the students.

Ideal candidates should be excellent teachers, who can demonstrate an ability to lead rigorous class discussion, develop assignments that lead students through critical analysis of complex and multi‑layered investigations, offer constructive criticism of student projects, and understand the importance of student‑led inquiry in the classroom.

You should be an excellent teacher with a student‑focused pedagogical style. Only applicants with a graduate degree (Masters, PhD) OR a college degree (BS, BA, BFA, etc.) and ten years of relevant professional experience will be considered. Applicants with a hybrid academic or professional background (e.g. art/design and engineering/science) are especially encouraged to apply.Ideal candidates should be excellent teachers and accomplished professional artists in their own right, who can demonstrate an ability to connect theory and practice with young artists with a varying degree of experience with course themes, and encourage student‑led inquiry in the classroom.

Additional Qualifications

• Professional experience in an international environment.
• A minimum of 3 years teaching experience at university level.
• Fluency in English and experience teaching in English.
• German work‑permit and tax number at the time of application, covering the entire period of the employment.
• Preference will be given to candidates who have international teaching experience.
