Position Overview

The University of Göttingen seeks 11 PhD researchers for the Research Training Group (RTG 3209) on China’s geoeconomic rise. Positions are open to all genders. Contract: Entgeltgruppe 13 TV‑L at 75% of full time. Start date 1 October 2026; positions expire 30 September 2029.

Research Context

The RTG unites scholars from Economics, Political Science, and Area Studies to examine how China accumulates and exercises structural power across security, production, finance, and knowledge domains. The group emphasizes innovative data, including Chinese‑language sources.

Responsibilities

As a PhD researcher you will design and conduct an original research project within the broader RTG framework, engage with cutting‑edge debates, develop advanced methodological skills, and collaborate with a cohort on one of the most consequential topics in contemporary international relations.

Who We Are Looking For

  • Completed master’s degree (or equivalent) with good or very good grade in Economics, Political Science, International Relations, Asian or China Studies, Development Studies, Global Governance, International Security, Agricultural Studies, or related fields
  • Strong methodological skills, quantitative or qualitative, suited to chosen focus area
  • Fulfilment of doctoral program requirements at University of Göttingen
  • Fluency in English (working language of RTG); advanced Chinese an asset and required for some positions
  • A self‑designed, innovative, feasible research proposal that clearly contributes to one or more Research Clusters
