PhD Student Immunology (DFG-funded Research Unit (RU 5930)

The University of Lübeck stands for excellent research and teaching. We are a modern foundation university with thematically focused study courses. Under the motto "Focus on life", as a life science university we offer a spectrum of programs ranging from medicine, health sciences and psychology to mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.

How do adaptive immune responses contribute to vascular inflammation and disease? We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral researcher to investigate the role of CD4+ T cells in vascular pathologies. The Institute in Lübeck invites applications for a doctoral research position (65% TV-L E13, 4 years). The position is embedded in a DFG-funded Research Unit (RU 5930), a multidisciplinary collaboration investigating immune mechanisms that drive vascular diseases such as pulmonary arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis, and systemic sclerosis.

The project, led by PD Dr med Jens Humrich and Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Kathrin Kalies, focuses on identifying and characterizing CD4+ T cell subsets in patients and mouse models. Using advanced immune phenotyping and T cell receptor repertoire analysis, the project aims to uncover how specific T cell populations contribute to vascular inflammation and disease progression. The successful candidate will join a small and supportive research group with close supervision and a collaborative atmosphere. Through the Research Unit, the candidate will interact with clinicians, immunologists, and vascular biologists and benefit from a highly interdisciplinary research environment.

Tasks

  • Identification and characterization of CD4+ T cell subsets in human samples and mouse models
  • Application of advanced flow cytometry and immune phenotyping approaches
  • Analysis of T cell receptor repertoires
  • Experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of results
  • Preparation of scientific publications and presentation of findings at national and international conferences
  • Active participation in collaborative projects within the DFG Research Unit

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in immunology, biology, biomedicine, or a related life science discipline
  • Strong interest in immunology and vascular biology
  • Experience with flow cytometry, immunological techniques, or mouse models is advantageous but not required
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Strong motivation and curiosity for scientific research
  • Very good communication skills and proficiency in English

What we offer

  • Collectively agreed remuneration including annual special payment (TV-L)
  • 30 days holiday per year, plus 24.12. and 31.12. off work
  • Compatibility of family, private life and career through flexible working hours and part-time options (after individual assessment) as well as the possibility of mobile working
  • NAH.SH / Deutschland public transport ticket, participation in university sports, discounted canteen meals on campus and other corporate benefits
  • Health management programme "Healthy University"
  • A company pension scheme with high additional payments by the employer (VBL)
  • A secure job and a university environment with its typically lively and innovative character, with numerous events and further training opportunities
