Postdoctoral Fellow in Informatics & AI / Cardiovascular System Biology

The Cardiovascular System Biology group (CVSB, Prof. Harald Langer) at the University clinic of Mannheim is looking for a postdoctoral fellow (100%) in the field of informatics. The group focuses on the interconnections between the immune system and cardiovascular diseases. The position is full‑time (100%) and limited to 3 years with the possibility of extension. It is part of the University of Heidelberg and a member of the Germany Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK).

In our newly granted project "Innovative AI‑powered heart valve validation: An objective measurement method for successful surgeries and improved patient care", we aim to develop an AI‑supported heart valve validation method. The project involves creating a multi‑sensor array to objectively measure the success of heart‑valve surgeries, and a key part will involve using skin models to assess the effects of injected substances and tissue reactions.

Your responsibilities:

• AI & Machine Learning: Development and implementation of AI methods for diagnostic classification
• Dynamic Data Analysis: Modeling and analysis of transient signals derived from injections into (cell‑seeded) skin phantoms
• Software Engineering: Creating automated software for real‑time data processing and data flow analysis from sensor to cloud
• Digital Interfaces: Developing wireless communication and power‑optimized transmission modules
• Expert Systems: Integrating medical expert knowledge into AI algorithms to reduce data noise and improve diagnostic safety

Requirements:

• A PhD in Computer Science, (Bio)‑informatics, or a related technical field.
• Advanced experience in Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
• Strong programming skills for AI development and hardware‑related data processing.
• Proven track record of delivering ambitious research projects.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team (collaboration with HS Mannheim).
• Interest in system biology and the mathematical representation of biological processes (e.g., cell culture reactions).
• Experience with spectroscopic data (UV, VIS, IR) or medical software standards.
• Versatile workplace at the intersection of AI and vascular medicine.
• Access to state‑of‑the‑art infrastructure and innovative in‑vivo/in‑vitro techniques.
