Principal Engineer - MVDC Circuit Breaker

Overview

In this role you lead design, simulation, and testing of medium-voltage and MVDC circuit breakers to meet IEC/IEEE standards. You collaborate with European universities to advance switching technologies and publish IP-driven findings. You’ll innovate ultrafast MVDC interruption concepts and guide lab testing with safety and reliability at the core. The position sits within Huawei’s Power Conversion Technology Laboratory, driving impact in PV, BESS, data centers, EVs, and embedded power. You will shape research directions and contribute to patents while leading cross‑functional teams.

Verantwortungsbereiche
  • Design, simulate, and test MV circuit breakers (vacuum, SSCB, hybrid) to IEC standards
  • Innovate ultrafast MVDC circuit breakers for next-generation power systems
  • Design, model, and optimize Thomson coil actuators for performance and reliability
  • Establish MV/MVDC test circuits, assemble prototypes, conduct high-voltage lab experiments
  • Lead joint research with European universities; publish findings and contribute to patents/IP
  • Ensure compliance with IEC/IEEE standards while driving novel concepts in MVDC interruption and fault mitigation
Zentrale Anforderungen
  • 5+ years of hands-on MV/HVDC protection experience including circuit breaker design, fault analysis, and interruption technologies
  • Knowledge of hybrid circuit breakers, ultra-fast protection schemes, MVDC breakers, DER integration (PV/BESS)
  • Experience with real-time simulation or FPGA-based control systems
  • Experience with vacuum or gaseous circuit breakers (advantageous)
  • Strong electromagnetic and thermal modeling background for high-power applications
  • Publication record or collaboration with research institutions in MV protection technologies
