The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena is dedicated to interdisciplinary fundamental research in the field of Earth system sciences with a focus on climate and ecosystems. The internationally renowned institute—which currently employs around 280 people—celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2022. Jena offers a high-tech environment, a modern university, a diverse cultural scene, and access to the green Saale valley. At the earliest opportunity, we are looking for a Radiocarbon Laboratory Engineer (m/f/d) for a full-time position for 2 years, with potential for a permanent position.
The MPI for Biogeochemistry seeks an engineer to support the institute’s 14C lab facility, which enables radiocarbon measurements in biogeochemistry and carbon cycle research. The facility is equipped with an IonPlus Micadas accelerator mass spectrometer system with a hybrid ion source that allows for the measurement of graphite targets as well as CO2 gas inlet operation for very small samples. It also has a laboratory for preparation, CO2 purification, and graphitization of samples, with automation involved in several processes. The 14C laboratory staff includes a laboratory head, an engineer (open position), and two chemical technical assistants specializing in sample pretreatment and graphitization.
We seek an engineer who will support regular operations, maintenance, and ongoing development of the laboratory systems, with the expertise to identify and repair problems with instrumentation and software interfaces. The individual will support the 14C lab team to supply routine radiocarbon analyses to support science at the MPI for Biogeochemistry, as well as work with scientists to develop new systems for sample preparation.
The full-time position is to be filled as soon as possible. Part-time work is generally possible. The position will be evaluated and graded following the collective agreement according to TVöD Bund; in addition, we will provide a pension plan based on the public service (VBL).
The Max Planck Society (MPS) strives for gender equality and diversity. The MPS aims to increase the proportion of women in areas where they are underrepresented. Women are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from all fields. The Max Planck Society has set itself the goal of employing more severely disabled people. Applications from severely disabled persons are expressly encouraged.
