The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Hessian.AI research group “Artificial Intelligence – Deep Decision Support Systems”, led by Prof. Dr. Martin Becker, is currently accepting applications for a highly motivated Research Assistant (Postdoc) for developing knowledge-centric AI for real‑world applications (e.g., foundation models, geometric deep learning or graph neural networks in the bio‑medical domain). Starting as soon as possible, the position is offered for a period of two years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The position is fulltime with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV‑H E 13).

You will be part of a dynamic and highly motivated research group ( We develop state‑of‑the‑art knowledge‑centric AI and machine learning methods (e.g., foundation models, graph and geometric deep learning, pattern mining) to address high‑impact real‑world challenges with a focus on biomedical problem settings (e.g., pregnancy, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer). The group provides a strong network to local AI expertise (e.g., Hessian.AI, TU Darmstadt), large‑scale compute infrastructure, as well as a broad international network (Stanford, UC San Diego, Lund (Sweden) or McGill (Canada)). Prospectively this position will collaborate closely with the UKE Hamburg on modeling biomedical systems.

Tasks

Developing novel knowledge‑centric artificial intelligence methods for understanding complex systems (e.g., foundation models, graph and geometric deep learning, eXplainable AI, pattern mining, …)
National and international collaborations with AI researchers and domain experts (single cell and spatial biology, biomedicine, immune system, pregnancy, neurodegenerative diseases, behavioral modeling, …)
Driving high‑impact open research: contribute to open‑source toolkits, co‑author peer‑reviewed conference and journal publications, present results internationally
Scientific services in research and teaching, including the supervision and mentoring of junior students
Development and implementation of project ideas including preparation and contribution to competitive research proposals - laying the groundwork for an internationally visible independent scientific profile

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.

Profile

MSc‑degree or equivalent and a PhD (completed on the start date of employment) in computer science, mathematics, physics or a related field, or an applied/life science (e.g., engineering, biology, or medicine), with a focus on data analysis and/or machine learning (very good grades are generally required)
Strong interest in developing AI for real‑world applications
Several years of experience in machine learning, AI, and data science with strong theoretical foundations; optimally but not required: knowledge in single cell or spatial biology and multi‑omics integration (e.g., flow cytometry, FACS, CyTOF, MERFISH, spectroscopy, etc.)
Structured, self‑managed and team‑oriented working style with strong communication skills
Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams as well as lead junior researchers, and strong commitment to your own scientific development
Proficiency in written and spoken English as well as excellent presentation skills of research results
