GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) is one of the world’s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. The Hot and Dense QCD matter department is one of the three theory departments at GSI focused on dynamical modelling of heavy‑ion reactions. The other two theory departments are Hadron Physics and QCD as well as Nuclear Astrophysics and Structure.

The successful candidate is expected to support the theory groups for scientific computing leading to a more efficient usage of high‑performance computing facilities. The selected person will (in the long‑term) enable scientific developments and provide advice for fulfilment of open science regulations.

  • Assist with open‑source software and its maintenance
  • Support with employment of HPC clusters by building containers and adapting submission scripts
  • Adapt software to new hardware requirements and proposal writing for cluster usage
  • Port software and run setups to novel architectures; modernise existing software
  • Optimize critical parts of calculations
  • Implement novel algorithms
  • Support with data analysis and scientific visualisation

Your profile:

The successful candidate should have experience with computing for physics applications. In particular, the following points are required:

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) in physics or an MSc in mathematics, computational science or engineering
  • Strong background in HPC and scientific computing and strong interest in numerical algorithms and parallelisation strategies
  • Experience with porting and optimisation of parallel HPC software for modern architectures including GPUs
  • Excellent knowledge of a variety of suitable computing languages (including C++ and Fortran)
  • Excellent proficiency in scripting and Unix shell languages (e.g. Python and bash)
  • Proficient with tools for software development like git, GitLab/GitHub, including continuous integration and unit tests
  • Experience with parallelisation using MPI and OpenMP together with Slurm
  • Ability to work independently and systematically on different tasks at the same time
  • Communication skills (oral and written)
  • Ability to work in a team and didactic competence

We offer:

The contract is unlimited. The salary is based on the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD).
